The Social Darwinists Andrew Carnegie T. Roosevelt Sr. C. Vanderbilt

Social Darwinism and Business Natural Competition controls the economy. Government is not there to help people, but to support business. Big business can take over small business. Ruthless methods are OK.

Social Darwinism and Race Only the strong races can survive. Technology should be kept by races that create advancement. Justification for colonization (genocide)

America’s Reaction “Self-made man” concept built the country. “Rugged Individualism” is good. Wealth is the reward for hard work and ability. Failure is due to lack of ability and laziness.

First use of the term “Eugenics” Francis Galton (Charles Darwin's cousin) 19th Century Eugenicist believed certain types were more “moral than others”. Attempted to prove that social class was a result of heredity We greatly want a brief word to express the science of improving stock, which is by no means confined to questions of judicious mating, but which, especially in the case of man, takes cognizance of all influences that tend in however remote a degree to give to the more suitable races or strains of blood a better chance of prevailing speedily over the less suitable than they otherwise would have had. The word eugenics would sufficiently express this idea.
