Lucas in NL Harmonised Land Use/ Land Cover Statistics, Part A Chantal Melser & Osman Baydar, Statistics NL

Main datasource – Land Use Statistics Lucas – Land Use Main datasource – Land Use Statistics Based on aerial photography, frequency of each 2-3 years. With the land Use statistics as the basis, we can already assign 95 percent of the area to an harmonised Lucas category. Lucas in NL

Compliance and precision Lucas – Land Use Compliance and precision Production of Land Use statistics – Mapping based GIS data. Lower limit usually 1 hectare. Additional information makes it very accurate. Top10NL roads, water bodies. Example – area of commercial services recognised at the unit of the individual shops. 1:10 000 Lucas in NL

95 percent Lucas – Land Use Compliance and precision already available! Commercial services have an equivalent dutch category in land use statistics – harmonised data already available. Primary production is available with adding our agriculture (including greenhouses), kitchen gardens, forest, fisheries. In this way 95 percent of the area already available. Community services needs a combination of public facilities (official buildings), schools and health (part of our social facilities), religious services (graveyards) Harmonisation table available in our interim report and on demand we can send it. Lucas in NL

Remaining 5 percent – establishments Lucas – Land Use Remaining 5 percent – establishments To assign the remaining 5 percent to a Lucas category. Grey – assigned to industrial area, 210-220, heavy industry, corresponding with the harbour activities. Blue – including all kind of shops, commercial services in centre of the town. Red - including transport networks Yellow – including light end industry Lucas in NL

Remaining 5 percent – establishments Lucas – Land Use Remaining 5 percent – establishments Area of industrial area and offices. Points of establishments with NACE-code. NACE-code harmonised with LUCAS code. Establishments with postal code (no house number, estimation of location) Establishments assigned to closest area, industrial area divided by number of establishments to LUCAS code. Areas without assigned establishment – small area assigned to dominant Lucas code, larger areas (above 50 hectare) assigned manually by areal photos. (n=44). Lucas in NL

Remember… only for 5% of the total area! Lucas – Land Use Main uncertainties… inaccuracy in method… assigning establishments to areas (distance) percentages area on number of establishments areas without establishments - main lucas code primary schools not included (our decision) Remember… only for 5% of the total area! distance sometimes large (2 km for being able to assign waste water treatment, no offices close by) not all establishments equal in size, basic assumption industrial area pretty sure, but community services sometimes really doubtful primary schools are within residential areas, we rather leave these areas untouched, no other variables involved, small areas. Main waters assigned to water transport, although that does not always cover our association with our main waters. Water is just water… However, that is also conform inspire and we will have to live with this. Lucas in NL

Conform national Land Use statistics Data from our national database statline, internet. 2008. 95% is perfectly conform national Land Use statistics. Remaining 5% estimating does not touch polygons of areas in GIS-map, results Lucas still conform Land Use statistics Lucas in NL

Lucas categories with assigning method: U200 Secondary production Lucas – Land Use Main difficulties… Lucas categories with assigning method: U200 Secondary production U300 Tertiary production (except U310) U420 Logistical and storage U430 Utilities Remember… only for 5% of the total area! Utilities more uncertain than most other categories. Detailed work on community services, cultural and entertainment. Straightforward assignment on secondary and tertiary production, but still, assignment! but I have to admit that now and then it came into my mind that the whole Lucas had agriculture as its background, and not industrial areas nor residential areas… Most of our work deals only with these kind of areas.
