SOCIAL STUDIES GRADE TWO – THE CONTINENTS Identify reasons for using a map or globe Using a Compass Rose Directional Words Maps and Globes The Continents Vocabulary: continent Equator location compass rose north, south, east, west immigration/immigrant North Pole South Pole Differences The Equator Locating Places on a Map Five Oceans Seven continents Location of Tolland, Connecticut, and the United States in North America Essential Learning Expectations: The world is made of seven continents surrounded by five oceans. There are multiple ways (e.g. your town, your state, your country, north of…or south of…) to explain your location. The Equator is an imaginary line that divides the round Earth into two parts. Directional words show the relationship between locations. Globes and maps come in different forms and have different purposes.
