Main Purposes Inform Persuade Convey information You act as the teacher Enhance the knowledge of the listener Do so clearly, accurately, interestingly Change someone’s attitude Convince them to believe the way you do Your primary goal is to win over your listener

Ways To Organize Chronological Spatial Causal Problem-Solution Topical

Chronological Order Events are arranged in order of occurrence First to last, last to first Ex. Great events of American history Ex. Steps to getting a tattoo Mainly used for informative speeches

Spatial Order Speech follows a directional pattern Top to bottom, left to right, front to back, east to west, etc. Ex. Trip across the U.S. Ex. Three stories of your house Mainly used for informative speeches

Causal Order Cause-Effect relationship 2 main points (1st is the cause, 2nd is the effect) Ex. Smoking is a wide- spread problem, lung cancer has increased Used for informative and persuasive speeches

Problem-Solution Order Explain the problem, give a solution 2 main points (1st the problem, 2nd the solution) Ex. Childhood obesity, increase exercise programs at school Most appropriate for persuasive speeches

Topical Order When nothing else seems to fit… Ex. Types of fireworks Accomplishments of Cal Ripken Jr.

Delivery Techniques Use the same pattern of wording for main points Balance the amount of time you give each main point Strengthen the transitional phrases Signpost (P. 217-218)
