How & Why Do We Tell Stories? A Storytelling Unit Day 5

STORYTELLING UNIT: DAY 5 Instructions: Correct the following sentence in the Bell Ringer section of your notebook. Draw a line separating the subject part of the sentence from the predicate. Hint: The predicate contains the verb! Bell Ringer: Oxygen was descovered in 1772 by the Sweedish chemist, Carl Scheele, but he withheld the information until 2 years later when Joseph Priestly made the same descovery. VOCABULARY SPOTLIGHT 5 minutes Use the examples to determine meaning of tier two vocabulary. The sly pick-pocket filched Jim’s wallet without being detected. If you never complete any of your homework or class work, a bad grade is inevitable. Hint: Check the glossary in your on- line text for examples of the literary terms! What Would You Need to Survive? 20 minutes 3 minutes: Individually come up with 10 essential items that you would need to have if stranded 3 minutes: Work with your group to create a collaborative list of 10 essential survival items. Be able to defend your choices! Access the Padlet link on the class website and upload your group’s list. Review & discuss Padlet wall with class

The Most Dangerous Game 40 minutes On the paper provided, begin a mind map with “Most Dangerous Game” labeled in the center and branches labeled with “Character Development”, “Suspense”, and “Universal Topics and Themes”. Turn to page 4 in your textbook. Follow along as we read the opening of the story and consider our driving essential questions. Be prepared to read when called upon.

Storytelling project 15 mins. Go to the Storytelling Unit Project page on the class website. 10 minutes: Read and discuss the assignment, noting important details. 5 minutes: What questions do you have?
