Who is Flannery O’Connor? One of the greatest short story and essay writers of the 20th century Born in Savannah, Georgia but lived in Milledgeville with her mother A devout Roman Catholic She published two novels and 32 short stories Also known as “a regionalist”, a Southern Lady and a Roman Catholic novelist

Writing Style Because of her Roman Catholic beliefs, she had a reoccurring theme of religion in her works One of her characters is often times a preacher or minister of some kind Usually a woman that experiences hardship Creates comical characters Themes of life, death, the universe and religion

Personal Life Died at 40 years old from an incurable disease called “disseminated lupus” Attended the University of Iowa where she wrote her first short story “The Geranium” (1946) She hoped to be a cartoonist, but excelled more in writing First cousins helped turn her home into a Georgia historical landmark called “Andalusia Farm” Loved birds, but her favorite was the peacock.
