What occurred during the Civil War? Notes #22

President Abraham Lincoln opposed the secession of the Southern states from the Union (U.S.) by arguing that the U.S. government was a union of people and not of states. President Abraham Lincoln (1861–1865)

Lincoln justified fighting the Civil War because he believed his oath of office required him to defend and preserve the Union. South (Confederacy) attacks and seizes Fort Sumter in South Carolina (April 12–14, 1861); Civil War begins

Battle of Gettysburg (July 1–3, 1863); over 45,000 casualties The Civil War occurred from 1861 to 1865 and resulted in over 600,000 Americans being killed by diseases or new military technologies. Battle of Gettysburg (July 1–3, 1863); over 45,000 casualties
