The RFP: The Proposal Roadmap Where it all begins Vary by agency & program Rules, regulations and limitations

The RFP: Is the PI eligible? What is the funder seeking to fund? What are the specific requirements of a project or a proposal? What will the agency fund? What can you use the money to buy?

How to read an RFP RFP’s generally are organized in logical order—although this can vary widely by finding source or organization. Here is a general outline and some clues about what you’ll find in these areas: General Summary This is a quick overview of what the grant program is about, and also gives you a clue about the goals of the funding organization for this program

Eligibility Information This section tells you who can apply for funds. Funds Available This section tells you how much money is available for the program and how much is available for each specific grant.

How to Apply This section should give specific information about the logistics and steps to apply for a grant.  It should tell you if there is an electronic system that you’re required to use or submitted in some other format.  It may also tell you what budget format is preferred (or required) in your application.

Budget information This section will tell you rules on spending funds.  Proposal Components Treat this section as an outline for the proposal. It is usually beneficial for the PI to write the proposal in the order the RFP is written

Formatting Rules for each agency Links to agency formatting guides can usually be found within RFPs. CVs, References, Support letters, current and pending support forms, etc., must all be formatted according to specific agency rules.
