John 11

Jesus Hears of Lazarus Jesus was very close to Lazarus, and his sisters, Mary and Martha. Lazarus became very sick, and the sisters sent word to Jesus. Jesus stayed where he was 2 more days! Eventually, Jesus decided to go to Bethany. The disciples are nervous. But Jesus is confident.

Martha Meets Jesus By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus had been dead for four days. Martha went out to greet him. “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (11:21) “But I know that even now God will give you what you ask.” (11:22).

Martha Meets Jesus Jesus said, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus responded, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (11:25-26).

Jesus Arrives at Bethany Then Mary went out to meet Jesus. “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (11:32) “Jesus wept.” (11:35) Jesus told them to take away the stone. Jesus prayed to his Father (11:41) Then Jesus called, “Lazarus, come out!” Lazarus came out of the tomb.

The Leaders Plot to Kill Jesus People were putting their faith in Jesus (11:45-57) The Jewish leaders had to put a stop to this. They decided the only thing they could do was put him to death. So Jesus stopped moving publicly among the Jews.

Mary Anoints Jesus John 12:1-8 Jesus had dinner at the house of Mary and Martha. Mary took a pint of pure nard and anointed Jesus’ feet. This would have cost a year’s wages! Then she wipes his feet with her hair! Judas is upset at her actions. But Jesus defends what she did.

The Plot Thickens People were going to see Jesus and Lazarus. So the chief priests decided they would have to kill Lazarus too. That Sunday, Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey.
