Parent Night 2018-2019 Miss Lord-First Grade

Welcome to 1st Grade! I am thrilled to have your child in my class this year! I know this year is going to be fantastic! This presentation is just to give you a few helpful tips about some of our procedures and routines we will be following throughout this school year. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me or message me on Remind 101.

Meet the Teacher Korra- 9 months old

I was born in California and I am a “military brat” so I have lived many places, but I call Mustang home. I moved to Mustang when I was 7 and went to Lakehoma from 2nd to 5th grade but moved again and I am an El Reno HS graduate. I graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 2010 with a degree in Elementary Education. I did my student teaching here at Lakehoma and have spent my whole career here so far. I have taught 2nd and 3rd grade but 1st grade is my passion and this will be my 5th year teaching it.

General Schedule 7:30-8:00- Announcements/ Morning Work 8:00-8:15- Calendar 8:15-8:55- Writing 8:55-9:50- Specials (Students will go to PE every other day and alternating music and art when they are not at PE.) 9:50-10:00- Snack and read aloud 10:00-11:15- Math Block 11:15-11:50- Science/ Social Studies 11:50-12:15- Lunch 12:15-12:35- Recess 12:45-2:15- ELA Block 2:15-2:35- Get packed up for home 2:35- Dismissal *STEM is every Wed. from 11:00-11:30 *Computer lab is every Wednesday from 1:15-2:00 On Wednesdays the schedule is a bit different

Grading We do not give grades on work in class. I, however, will grade some of their assignments in order to determine how they are progressing toward the objected goals for the report card. You might see a star, check mark, or a WT written on your students paper that indicates I have seen their work. If it has a WT (worked together) on their paper that means that your child completed that assignment at first by themselves and then we went over it as a class. Your child was supposed to grade their own paper as we went over it together. We are standard based. Students at the end of the nine weeks will be tested over the standards and skills taught. They will receive a 1, 2, 3, or 4 on their report card that will indicate their progress in class.

Home Links Home Links are a part of MPS Every Day Math curriculum. They will go home Monday- Thursday. For each Homelinks your child brings back to school completed, they will earn a ticket for the weekly drawing.

Reading Logs Reading Logs will start next week. Please document the number of minutes read each day and then add them up weekly. These will be checked randomly throughout the month and handed in at the end of each month.

Other Homework Any work that is not completed during class will go home to be completed. Spelling homework and sight words to study will go home on Monday. Tests will be on Friday. Students will have 10 words on each test, they will just know the word family. For example, if the phonics skill is short a, the words may be: at, sad, map etc. I will also have five sight words that your child needs to be able to read without hesitation at the end of the week. Your child will need to know 100 sight words by the end of the year for report card. Reading logs - read at least 20 minutes a night! We will start math fact tests soon. Your child will be given a math fact test on Fridays

Oops! If I send home an assignment with an “Oops” paper attached that means your child was not using their working time wisely during class. Please read and sign the note. The student must complete the unfinished assignment and bring it back the next day.

Daily Communication Binder (OCEAN Binder) Please check every night and send back each day.

Behavior Calendar Behavior charts will begin in September and need to be checked daily. They will be located in the Ocean Binder.

Parent-Teacher Communication Please check binders for any important notes from class. Most of our updates will come from Remind101 texts so please be sure you are signed up for those. My school website will be updated, there are directions to get to the site in the Ocean Binder. If you need to contact me, email, Remind 101 or text messages are best.

Want to Volunteer? Please let me know! If you would like to volunteer in the classroom at anytime this year, you will need to stop by the office and let them make a copy of your license so they can complete a background check

Classroom/School Expectations We are a Great Expectations model school. In our classrooms, we are working very hard to learn and follow Great Expectations as well as Love and Logic.

Discipline The first time any mistake is made, your student will get a friendly reminder. The second time, I will conference with your student and we will establish why the expectation is not being met. We will then set a goal to correct it. The third time, Your student may walk at recess, write an apology note, or have another logical consequence. Any behavior issues will be noted in the behavior calendar.

Snack Students may bring their own snack to class each day. We have class snacks available for anyone who forgets or does not have a snack for the day. Donations to our class snacks are greatly appreciated!  Great snack options: fruit, crackers, dry cereal, Goldfish, pretzels, animal crackers etc. Please do not send candy in for a snack.

Birthdays We have a new policy this year that we can only celebrate birthdays once a month. I sent a schedule of the days we will celebrate birthdays. We have to have a healthy option offered if you choose to bring cupcakes. You do not have to bring anything at all. That is completely optional. We will still celebrate your child’s birthday by singing to them and they will receive a special treat from me.

Tardiness/ Absences School doors open at 7:15 Bell rings at 7:30 Tardy bell rings at 7:40

Bronco Boogie Bronco Boogie is at 7:30 in the gym every Friday. Our class will present at Bronco Boogie twice this year!  Friday, September 21st and Friday, April 5th **All parents are welcome to come watch us on these days! 

Student handbook is available online. - Monthly newsletters, reading logs and behavior charts will start in September - Label all of their belongings (jackets, lunch boxes, backpacks, etc.)

THANK YOU! Lastly…thank you for sharing your child with me! I am looking forward to helping your children grow and learn. Here’s to an amazing year! – Miss Lord
