Safety Symbols

Safety Goggles Always use goggles to protect eyes from chemicals, flames, or broken glass.

A lab apron protects skin and clothing.

Breakage You are working with material that can easily be broken. (beakers, test tubes, etc.)

Use when handling hot materials such as hot plates and hot glass ware. Heat-Resistant Glove Use when handling hot materials such as hot plates and hot glass ware.

Heating Use a clamp or a tong to pick up hot glassware.

Sharp Object Always direct a sharp edge of a knife, scalpel, needles or pins away yourself and others.

Electric Shock Never use electrical equipment around water, or when the equipment is wet. Disconnect equipment when not in use.

Corrosive Chemical Avoid getting corrosive chemicals such as acid on your skin, eyes or clothes. Avoid vapors and make sure you wash hands.

Poison Don’t let poison come in contact with your skin and don’t inhale the vapors. Wash hands when you are finished.

Physical Safety When the experiment involves physical activity ensure that you follow procedure. Inform teacher if you can’t participate.

Animal Safety Treat animals with care and avoid harming them. After you handle animals wash hands.

Plant Safety Avoid touching plants you are allergic to. Avoid poison Ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. Always wash hand after handling them.

Flames You may be working with a flame from a lab burner, candle or matches. Tie back long hair and follow instruction for lighting.

No Flames Flammable material may be present. Make sure there are no flames or sparks present.

Fumes Poisonous or unpleasant fumes may be involved. Avoid inhaling vapors. If testing for sent, waft vapor towards nose.

Chemicals or materials in a lab must be exposed safely. Disposal Chemicals or materials in a lab must be exposed safely.

Hand Washing Wash entire hands with antibacterial soap and warm water after using chemicals.
