Coaching Up, Down and Across Tim Pickering, IPM Developed by ICMA’s Felicia Logan, Executive Coach Leadership Development Director

Coaching is a Pathway to Meaningful Relationships Harvard Business Review says: “Coaching is the one leadership skill most needed to retain high performers and put change into positive action.” High performers want to know that you will invest in them—and make a personal investment. We are all going to get the chance to build that coaching muscle together. Presenter Tim Pickering, IPM 480.577.0949

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT This session provides practice in the skills of coaching: trusting intuition learning to ask the right questions mining strengths of individuals and organizations Presenter Tim Pickering, IPM 480.577.0949

PROVIDE a TIME and PLACE As coach, your primary role is to provide a time and place for focus possibility, learning and action. Presenter Tim Pickering, IPM 480.577.0949

What It’s Not Remember that coaching is not counseling, mentoring or advice giving What It’s Not

WHAT COACHING IS Your job as coach is to help the person identify desired change describe it in 3-4 sentences identify action that will support the desired change

Listen with your ears and your intuition LISTEN, FOCUS, ASK Focus the issue Listen with your ears and your intuition Ask powerful questions What do we mean by powerful questions? Not Why but What Not Why but How Presenter Tim Pickering, IPM 480.577.0949

Focus: It's not about you! No fish tales Be a “thinking partner” Coaching: Up, Down and Across Tips from ICMA Executive Coach Felicia Logan Process Focus: It's not about you! No fish tales Be a “thinking partner” Do not be helpful, solve the problem or give advice Focus on coaching the individual to be clear about desired outcome and change Ask powerful questions – not “Why?” Brainstorm options Create action plan and accountability

POWERFUL COACHING QUESTIONS What would you like to be coached about today? What outcome do you really want? What makes this important to you? What have you already done? What’s the next thing you could do? Would you like to hear what I think? What will you commit to do by when? How will you let me know as your coach? Would you like to hear my thoughts? Presenter Tim Pickering, IPM 480.577.0949

STOP YOURSELF FROM GIVING ADVICE Stay curious and explore possibilities When I am ready to give advice, I stop myself and get curious. Presenter Tim Pickering, IPM 480.577.0949

ACCOUNTABILITY ? Help move the person to “action” and create accountability. ? Ask, “What will you do, by when?” ? Ask, “What can you do to ensure that this actually happens?” Presenter Tim Pickering, IPM 480.577.0949

INDIVIDUAL EXERCISE On a piece of paper write down 2 things you would like to accomplish or change; choose one to get coaching on today Pick something specific that you can describe in 3 or 4 sentences. Frame it as an issue or a question that can be addressed today and moving forward. Be ready to let go, trust your coach and the process—and see what happens Each session is 15 minutes – make it count!

PARTNERING INSTRUCTIONS Try to find someone you don’t know well Partner with someone around you Raise your hand if you don’t have a partner PARTNERING INSTRUCTIONS Presenter Tim Pickering, IPM 480.577.0949

COACHING INSTRUCTIONS Each of you will get a chance to coach Each round of coaching is 15 minutes, then switch roles Try to stay on track  it’s easy to drift Not so much background on framing the issue As coach, fill the gap between the current and desired state Presenter Tim Pickering, IPM 480.577.0949

USE YOUR COACHING QUESTIONS What would you like to be coached about today? What outcome do you really want? What makes this important to you? What have you already done? What’s the next thing you could do? Would you like to hear what I think? What will you commit to do by when? How will you let me know your accomplishments? Are you ready to hear my thoughts? Presenter Tim Pickering, IPM 480.577.0949
