Smokeless Tobacco Comes in two forms: 1.Chewing tobacco- “dip” 2. Snuff – can be sniffed or chewed Chemicals do not get into lungs They are held in the mouth and absorbed in the tissues and the blood stream

Tobaccos affect on: Respiratory System – damages the air sacs in the lungs and can lead to lung disease Digestive System – increase the risk of cavities and gum disease, dulls the taste buds, and causes cancers of the mouth, throat, stomach, esophagus

Tobacco affects on: Nervous System – Reduces the flow of oxygen to the brain which leads to strokes Excretory System – Doubles the risk of bladder cancer

Tobacco affects on: Circulatory System – linked to heart disease, increases chances of a heart attack, raises blood pressure and heart rate

Affects of smoking on other parts of the body… Smokers get sick more often Your skin, breath, hair and clothes smell like smoke Causes your skin on fingers to turn yellow Changes your voice Causes premature wrinkles

Emphysema Alveoli – the tiny air sacs in the lungs Emphysema – a disease that results in the destruction of the alveoli in the lungs

Asthma A disorder in which the airways narrow; symptoms include wheezing or gasping, shortness of breath, coughing Medication to relieve symptoms, avoiding activities or substances that trigger attacks

Cancer The uncontrolled growth of cells that can spread from one part of the body to another Lung cancer is the leading cause of death among people who smoke

Why Do Teens Smoke Peer pressure Fear of losing friends Thinking it will help lose weight Other family members do it Celebrities do it More mature

Tolerance The body’s need for larger and larger amounts of a drug to produce the same effect The bodies need for nicotine causes a person to crave more tobacco products

Target Audience A group of people for which a product is intended Companies may package their cigarettes in bright colors or pay celebrities to advertise their products

Legal Bans on Tobacco Ads Can’t place any advertisements within 1000 feet of schools or playgrounds Can’t make or sell hats, t-shirts, or other items with logos on them No radio or tv commercials

Tobacco Smoke Mainstream smoke- The smoke that is inhaled and then exhaled by a smoker Sidestream smoke – smoke that comes from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe, or cigar

Legal Restrictions of Smoking Smoking is outlawed on airplanes Cannot smoke in buildings or restaurants Can’t smoke within 1000 feet of a school Packages must have clear warning labels on them Smokers insurance is more expensive

Reasons to be Tobacco Free… Staying healthy – people who smoke are sick more often Healthy skin Fresh breath Clean hair and clothes Better sports performances Saving money Keeping the environment healthy

Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms Sleep badly Crave nicotine Nervous Moody Extreme hunger

Quitting Smoking “Cold Turkey” Stopping all use of tobacco products immediately Withdrawal symptoms can last up to 6 months Doesn’t always work the first time so keep trying!!

Nicotine Replacement Therapy Replacing nicotine with nicotine substitutes such as nicotine gum or nicotine patches

TIPS FOR QUITTING Make a list of reasons why you quit Throw away all tobacco products and ashtrays Change little things to your daily routine like sit in a different seat at dinner Tell family and friends to help support you Avoid being around people who use tobacco Put aside the money you save and buy a present Exercise or call a friend to take your mind off smoking
