News & Updates 470 Digital Bookmobile visitors TechMan article Improved OverDrive user experience and help resources OverDrive Training Month Out-of-County Use Great PR for Digital Bookmobile. Pre-event coverage in PG, day-of story on KDKA, KQV, and in Trib. Almost double the new patron registrations on the two days of the events (August new patron registrations – highest ever at 732 - 626 in July) Out-of-County: confirmed with OverDrive that these circ stats were legitimate, began working with OverDrive to get information that might help us determine how to allocate the out-of-county stats, now able to divide the out-of-county stats by registering library, too early to see what impact that will have. Example: One library had a 10% increase from 8/16 – 8/31, but has more out-of-county circs than in-county circs so far in Sept.

OverDrive Collection Overview

Growth of OverDrive Collection What we’ve accomplished by working together… Stronger collection, better collection, cheaper collection (cost per circ $1.24, down from a high of over $3.00)

Items in OverDrive Collection by Library (eBook & eAudio only) * Library also offers eBooks and/or eAudio from other vendors.

Collection Development Snapshot, 2011 About 25% of budget is spent to add additional copies to satisfy holds. Average cost of an e-book: $23; eVideo = $14; eAudio = $62

2011 OverDrive Circulation by Month The stats for individual libraries are all over the place, but the general trend county-wide is up.

Annual OverDrive Circulation This year’s circ may exceed all previous year’s circs combined!

Annual OverDrive Circulation 2011 total based on 800 additional circs above previous month for each month. 800 was determined because it is the average change by month for the year. Conservative because OverDrive is anticipating that demand following Kindle compatibility will exceed the demand they saw after the 2010 holidays. * Conservative projection

Annual OverDrive Circulation 2011 total based on 800 additional circs above previous month for each month. 2012 total based on 2011 + 1/3 increase (guesstimation based on previous increases, projected market penetration of ereaders, increase because of Kindle use) Examples of data that we have used to inform our projections include: - a May 2011 Pew study that found that 12% of US adults have an e-reading device. That’s double what it was just six months prior. - a recent Forrester Research survey of publishing executives that found that half of the executives surveyed believe eBooks will be the dominant format by 2014, making up at least half of book sales. * Conservative projections

New OverDrive Patron Registrations (Life of Service) Projection based on adding avg number of new patrons/month for rest of year. New patron registrations dropped after January, but have steadily increased each month, with a significant jump between May and June (492 – 621) Unique patrons have also increased each month of 2011, growing from 1140 to 1615 in July. According to preliminary data from a Library Journal/SLJ survey of eBook penentration and use in public libraries: 59% of libraries say they have patrons who only want ebooks and 76% say they have new patrons because of ebooks

Amount Spent on Downloadables, 2011 One Click (formerly NetLibrary, currently on Ebsco, soon to be One Click) Libraries in bold have contributed $200 or more over their assessment. As the year winds down, if you have extra collection development dollars, we’d like you to consider contributing some to the downloadable funds. OverDrive = $80,000+ on content so far, and yet…

OverDrive Holds What are we doing to improve customer service? Adding notes on titles that we can’t add more copies of (because it is no longer available for purchase or because title has reached our budget threshold). - creating read-alike lists that are specific to the OverDrive collection, with notes on popular titles linking to the list. According to a study by Reading Group Choices, 25% of reading group members are using eBooks, up 10% from 2009. (PW 7/26/11) According to a Book Industry Study Group report, “Consumer Attitudes Toward E-book Reading,” 8% of e-book buyers have not bought a print book in the last 12 months. (PW 1/31/11)
