UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY The United States Department of Homeland Security(DHS) is a CABINET department of the Federal Government of the United States. DHS’s responsibility is PROTECTING the territory of the United States from TERRORIST attack and responding to NATURAL disasters.

AVIATION AND TRANSPORTATION SECURITY ACT November 2001 the AVIATION and Transportation SECURITY Act made airport security the responsibility of the FEDERAL Government.

AFGHANISTAN WAR On October 7, 2001, the U.S. and Australian forces initiated BOMBING campaigns in Afghanistan. The main goals of the war were to: defeat the TALIBAN drive AL QAEDA out of Afghanistan, CAPTURE key al Qaeda LEADERS. Efforts to kill or capture al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden have FAILED thus far.

IRAQ WAR Bush said Iraq was allied with terrorists and posed "a grave and growing danger" to U.S. interests through possession of "WEAPONS of MASS destruction” In late 2002 and early 2003, Bush urged the United Nations to enforce Iraqi DISARMAMENT mandates.

IRAQ WAR The invasion of Iraq began on March 20, 2003 The Iraqi MILITARY was quickly defeated. The capital, Baghdad, fell on April 9, 2003. On May 1, 2003, Bush declared the END of major combat operations in Iraq.

IRAQ WAR Iraqi ELECTIONS and a referendum to approve a CONSTITUTION were held in January and December 2005. On January 10, 2007 Bush addressed the U.S. about the situation in Iraq. In his speech he announced: the surge of 21,500 MORE TROOPS for Iraq a job program for Iraqis more reconstruction proposals U.S. $1.2 BILLION for these programs.

Saddam Hussein executed U.S. forces captured Saddam Hussein who was hidding in a hole under a farmhouse in Adwar, Iraq. Hussein, then 63, had been on the run since the fall of Baghdad to U.S. forces on April 9. The execution of Saddam Hussein took place on Saturday, 30 December 2006. Saddam was sentenced to death by hanging, after being convicted of crimes against humanity by the Iraqi Special Tribunal for the murder of 148 Iraqi Shi’ites in the town of Dujail in 1982, in retaliation for an assassination attempt against him.
