Duke Kunshan University WHF Emerging Leaders Duke Kunshan University 24-29 June 2018 Leadership Ironic that I’m standing here today talking about leadership…..because I definitely don’t see myself as a leader. Had time to reflect on leadership and what being a leader means……and it can mean different things to different people. Sharon Mitchell WHF Head Quarters

SESSION OUTCOMES I WILL I AM… What is your biggest possibility? Reframe your ambition into the ‘biggest possibility’ 2. How will you measure your success? Make a commitment in terms of where you want to be and how you will make sure you have succeeded 3. Who do you need to be? Who do you need to be to succeed and inspire others to work towards your goals, and the collective goals of your team? I WILL I AM… We are going to work on your vision of creating the biggest possibility Creating the biggest possibility

10 years from now you’ll wish you started today…. “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world” Ann Frank, Diary of a Young Girl , 1945 10 years from now you’ll wish you started today…. Creating the biggest possibility

WORKING SESSION What is the outcome that you are seeking to cause? Not what are you going to DO, but what will you HAVE, when you have succeeded? – Not about the HOW! Where do you want to be in 2025? In defining your outcome, burst the balloon of possibility, define something that is better and fundamentally different to the status quo. How will you measure success? How will you know that you have succeeded? How is this measured? Who do you need to be, in order to lead the achievement of this amazing outcome? How would you describe yourself in a way that inspires you and energises you every day, through which you are transformed to a big leader? This is an ‘I am’ statement. Creating the biggest possibility

MY STORY Standing on the shoulders of giants I don’t see myself as a leader…… I’m not born for this………but if you think about leaders who inspire you Leaders need followers…….who-s behind you? Collaborate on an equal basis to leverage influence Leadership is not about an individual, but about systems and behaviour Are they the loud, dictating, authoritarian leaders? Or Those who are humble, and inspire through their passion? Passion Creating the biggest possibility

What is the outcome that you are seeking to cause? MY STORY What is the outcome that you are seeking to cause? ‘Listen to the patient, he is telling you the diagnosis’ William Osler 1849 -1919 Using interprofessional education as a tool, I will improve patient care and reduce the burden of Cardiovascular Disease This is not based on new research, we do not need to go beyond what we already know. Do we really understand patients needs? How is it that campaigns or interventions are often least effective in high risk populations? I love education. When I talk about the best design to improve diagnosis or what steps we need to improve safe and effective patient care, it becomes easy. to bring the very best care to CVD patients, I will create a global interprofessional curriculum for care (communication, professionalism, collaboration etc…) Creating the biggest possibility

How will you measure success? MY STORY How will you measure success? How will you know that you have succeeded? How is this measured? Active champions and countries to join this programme each year with 50 countries on board by 2025. NCDs are a complex issue that we know one organisation or sector cannot solve alone; we need a true whole of society response. Bupa is working together with The Partnering Initiative and the NCD Alliance to build capability within Bupa and the wider system for more effective multi-sector collaboration for health impact. Creating the biggest possibility

MY STORY I am passionate Who do you need to be, in order to lead the achievement of this amazing outcome? How would you describe yourself in a way that inspires you and energises you every day, through which you are transformed to a big leader? This is an ‘I am’ statement. I am passionate great leaders bound by their passion to do great things Courage Integrity Vision Cooperation Planning Character Competence Conviction Creating the biggest possibility

CREATING THE BIGGEST POSSIBILITY – WORKING SESSION Who is the team? Who do you need to enrol to make this happen? Who will you work with to lead the change effort? What are the milestones? What is your end date? What are the milestones against which you will measure your progress? Creating the biggest possibility

LEADERSHIP IS TAKING A PLAYER WHERE THEY CAN’T TAKE THEMSELVES José Mourinho
