C-O-A-C-H Connect tasks with vision and priorities Observe normal routine Assume a coaching style Check backwards plan Highlight progress with data (“I can”)

FACEOFFS---

“I want” “I can”

OBJECTIVES Identify the 3 core needs that all people “want” Classify patients into a dominant “want test tubes” Reflect quotes that support the patient’s “want test tubes” Apply “asking why” framework to patient cases

LOVE AND BELONGING SIGNIFICANCE CERTAINTY AND SAFETY

LOVE AND BELONGING= The deep desire to feel accepted and cared for

SIGNIFICANCE= The deep desire to feel important and recognized

CERTAINTY= The desire to know what’s coming next, and to have controlled surroundings

WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Stop at 1:40

KEY POINT Any time we are having a tug-of-war with patients, we should stop and figure out their “want test tube.”

Reflect quotes that support the patient’s “want test tubes” Let’s assume you end up in a “tug of war” scenario with a patient who does not want to go to appointments

SHORT TERM GAME

EXAMPLES THAT CONNECT TASK WITH TEST TUBE Identified test tube: Love and Belonging I would use examples from her quote on how she wanted to reconnect with her sister and how her doctor can partner with her to answer questions about her health in order to make it to the trip to see and reconnect with her sister.

EXAMPLES THAT CONNECT TASK WITH TEST TUBE Identified test tube: Significance “ You’re an intelligent guy. I know understand that taking your seeing your doctor will help you stay out of the hospital. Once you’re stable you’ll be able to get a job and get a place like you want. If you don’t visit with your doctor, you might go back into the hospital, making it hard to keep your job and your place.”

EXAMPLES THAT STRUGGLED TO CONNECT TASK WITH TEST TUBE Identified test tube: Certainty and Safety “ I would explain the benefit, purpose the doctor. I would also reflect to patient she stated, ‘ I want to get better, I didn’t want to go back to the hospital.’ By reflecting and explaining to her that seeing the doctor would help improve her health.”

EXAMPLES THAT STRUGGLED TO CONNECT TASK WITH TEST TUBE Identified test tube: Love and Belonging “It seems like you love your family so much and you want to make sure they are safe, but you feel like your love is not returned by your family members. Your son and daughter are probably very worried about you and your husband, but they don’t really know how to help you in the right way because they are not sure you are sick. Perhaps when see your doctor regularly, your son and daughter will realize that you are not feeling the best, and they will spend more time with you. Also, you seeing your doctor regularly will help your body become better.”
