Assist in preparing and conducting sport and recreation sessions This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist in the preparation and conduct of sessions within the sport and recreation industry. The unit also focuses on assisting the responsible person to monitor and evaluate the sessions.

The Sport, Fitness and Recreation industry, is bound by a number of organisation policies and procedures. These can include Duty of care Equal opportunity Frequency and scope of equipment checks Incident and fault reporting Job descriptions and responsibilities Workplace health and safety Staff behaviour Working with children

1. Contribute to session planning. SISXCAI102A Assist in preparing and conducting sport and recreation sessions

A sample training session can be found here . 1.1. Offer suggestions that support the aims of the session and participants according to organisational policies and procedures. As a coach or instructor, the planning of a session is a major part of you job. Factors influencing the content of a training session include: Content of activity Methods of working with the participant/s Timing and sequencing of activities A sample training session can be found here .

1.2. Discuss suggestions with responsible person to determine suitability. Coaches and instructors often are under the guidance of a “responsible person”, and can be required to discuss their plans with the this person prior to implementation. A responsible person could include any of the following: Coordinator Supervisor Manager

You are required to research a sporting organisation, and determine the “chain of command” in that organisation, finishing at the top with the Head Coach.

2.1. Confirm session plan and assigned duties with responsible person. Planning is essential for a training session to run smoothly. This planning must be competed prior to the session, and often modified in consultation with your supervisor. Session plans should include: objectives / aims equipment required time location content (activities)

CASE STUDY You are the coach of an Under 10 Soccer team. The team has been training on Wednesday afternoons for 4 weeks at your home ground, Pioneer Park. You turn up for training the week before the season is to commence to find a team from another club training on the ground. When you ask their coach how long until they are finished with the ground, he replied “we have the ground booked all afternoon”. You call your club secretary, only to find out that your club doesn’t have a booking with the local council.

2.3. Notify responsible person of any difficulties and make required alterations as directed. From time to time, difficulties and problems may arise. Sometimes these can be easily solved, but often they will need to be discussed with your supervisor. These may include: Weather conditions affecting the venue Participant behaviour issues Equipment failure

2.4. Confirm final arrangements with the person responsible for the session. Confirming the arrangements for a session is necessary to ensure that the session runs smoothly. You may need to confirm the venue and equipment availability, the time frame for the session, number of participants, and many more arrangements. The final bookings and confirmations for venues and participants may be made by your supervisor, or by you as the person running the session.

3.1. Follow instructions to check equipment according to organisational policies and procedures. The Sport, Fitness and Recreation industry, is bound by a number of organisation policies and procedures. Equipment should be checked, using the Workplace Heath and Safety policy, in conjunction with any other relevant policy (eg, equipment checks) Equipment should be checked prior to each session, with no unsuitable equipment to be used

3.2. Communicate information required to safely participate in the session to participants according to organisational policies and procedures. It is important that rules exist in all sport, fitness and recreation sessions to enable participants to partake in a consistent and safe manner. WH&S requirements exist to cover the safe conduct of sport and recreation activities. Information that must be communicated includes: Clothing and equipment requirements Rules specific to the activity being undertaken Venue regulations and requirements

3.3. Assist participants to warm up for the activity according to organisational policies and procedures and instructions of responsible person. A warm-up is necessary to: Prevent injury Assist readiness to compete A warm-up should contain the following aspects: Gentle to moderate gross motor activities Flexibility Specific game skills This will be covered in more depth in the unit: SISSSPT303A – Conduct basic warm up and cool down programs

3.4. Refer situations and occurrences outside area of responsibility to responsible person according to organisational policies and procedures. At times, issues may arise that are outside of your area of responsibility. These should be reported to your supervisor for further action.

4. Assist in the delivery and supervision of the session. SISXCAI102A Assist in preparing and conducting sport and recreation sessions

4.1. Carry out assigned duties as directed. As an employee in the Sport, Fitness and Recreation industry, you will often be given instructions to carry out duties by your supervisor. These duties should be preformed in a timely and professional manner.

4.2. Respond to participant queries according to own level of responsibility. All participants need to feel valued and have access to equal opportunities in their activity. At times, some participants may demand more attention or may seem to be difficult to manage. It is important that they are dealt with fairly and their queries and difficulties are handled with patience. Failure to do this may turn the participant off the sport, limit their development and create a negative environment.

4.3. Explain and demonstrate techniques required for the session to participants in consultation with responsible person. Make sure all the participants can see the demonstration. Demonstration could be by coach, player, picture or video Ensure that the skill is demonstrated in the context of the game situation Highlight the main points of the skill Keep explanations simple and brief Try not to highlight more than 2 or 3 key points at a time Avoid pointing out things 'not to do' Break the skill into separate components for the demo Let the participants practice the skill

Verbal instructions are sometimes unclear - accompany verbal instructions with a complimentary visual. Always show the correct skill last. If you are showing a player the difference between what they are doing and what you want them to do, demonstrate the correct skill after you have shown them their current method. Such records may include: Fitness test results Attendance at training Specific skill drills results Game statistics As a result, with such information, coaches can then provide feedback on performance and plan future training strategies.

This book is designed to provide ease of recording for Rugby League Coaches at training and games. The recorder should be used to plan effective training sessions and will serve as a useful reference as the year progresses. Easy Check Player Profiles, Injury Record Reference, Team Sheets, Attendance Records and check lists - all are there for the Coach’s convenience.

4.5. Report problems in participant performance and response to responsible person. It is often necessary to report issues and problems that may arise to your supervisor. These issues may include but are not limited to: Dramatic increase / decrease in participant numbers Dramatic increase / decrease in participant skill Change in participant behaviour Change in participant attitudes This is of particular concern if the participant is a child, due to the duty of care and Child Protection Act.

5.1. Assist participants to cool down according to organisational policies and procedures. Cool down is necessary to: Prevent blood pooling To flush out waste products from the muscles To enhance recovery process To reduce stiffness and soreness following activity To enable future activity to take place with minimal discomfort. This will be covered in more depth in the unit: SISSSPT303A – Conduct basic warm up and cool down programs

Like any piece of equipment, sporting equipment has a limited “life”. 5.2. What might you do with receipt of negative feedback from a participant regarding their place in the batting order? What might you do with the receipt of positive feedback from a participant about a recent training session?

5.4. Explain plan for follow-up sessions to participants as directed. It is best practice to inform participants of future directions of the training plan. One way of doing this is to display/share a formal plan with participants to promote organisation, readiness and confidence in the program.

6.1. Provide personal feedback on the outcomes of the session to appropriate staff. Feedback should be given to your supervisor regarding your opinions about the following: suitability and safety of venues content of sessions structure and processes of activities / sessions participant progress

6.2. Convey participant feedback on the session to appropriate staff. It is important that participants have the ability to give feedback regarding the sessions they participate in. This is vital to ensuring that you are meeting the needs of your clients. This feedback can be in the form of verbal conversations, written forms or computerised surveys, just to name a few.

In order to determine quality of performance, participants should be able to assess their own performance in comparison to their peers and previous sessions. By doing this evaluation, participants are able to identify areas for improvement and focus on these for future development.

Upon completion of the activity, you are to complete your self-evaluation form, noting areas of possible improvement.
