SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

SEDIMENTARY ROCKS Sedimentary rocks- formed from loose sediment (the broken fragments of other rocks). These sediments are transported, deposited and eventually compacted and cemented together. This is called lithification.

Clastic rocks are composed of fragments, or clasts, of pre-existing rock.

Bioclastic rocks are composed of organic debris such as plants (lignite, coal) or shells (coquina, fossiliferous limestone).

Chemical/ Crystalline: formed from minerals that were once dissolved in water.

Are all Sed. Rocks distinguishable in only one of the groups (Clastic, Organic, Chemical)??
