Using saved IP to make a connection Date: 2012-11 Authors: Name Affiliations Address Phone email Chen Yanming China Mobile 16A,Danling Street, Haidian District, Beijing, China, 100080 +86 10 52696688-3045 chenyanming@cmdi.chinamobile.com Slide 1 CHEN Yanming, CMCC

Topics Background Problem Proposal Slide 2 CHEN Yanming, CMCC

Background When a new connection begin, STA should send DHCP requests by using its saved IP, which is workable at last time. This method comes from wired network, which is usable because of less mobility of the wired terminal. No unitized way to standardizing the time of using last IP when connecting. Device vendor has its own method to deal with this process. Different devices allowed different time spending for DHCP requests with old IP. Slide 3 CHEN Yanming, CMCC

Problem The nonstandard way of using saved IP for connection will cause the following results: Terminal will wait a long time to gain a valid IP because of trying the old IP too much times. Too long to get a valid IP because of using the unchanged old IP all the time. Get back ”can not get the IP address” The terminal even stop working Slide 4 CHEN Yanming, CMCC

Problem Evaluation problem Operators want to analyze the network DHCP request success rate by using the following formula: DHCP Request Success Rate=DHCP Request Success Time / DHCP Request Times DHCPReqSucRate=DHCPReqSucTimes/ DHCPReqTimes Try too much time to gain a valid IP will increase the value of “DHCPReqTimes” and then finally reduce the value of “DHCPReqSucRate” . Even if there is no problem of the AP/AC, or the network situation. Slide 5 CHEN Yanming, CMCC

Proposal Describe Unify the time range of using last IP by AP controlling. An estimate can be made when the time out of using last IP happened. The number of the time out events is an important indicator to analyze the reason of DHCP request failures. Which can discriminate the true problems of AP. Realization A new counter is proposed to add into AP MIB, called dot11timeoutofusinglastIP And then, the formula of DHCP request success rate can change to: DHCPReqSucRate=DHCPReqSucTimes/ (DHCPReqTimes - dot11timeoutofusinglastIP) Slide 6 CHEN Yanming, CMCC

Straw Poll Do you think it meaningful to put the TimeoutofusinglastIP counter into the MIB to estimate the connection capability of AP more factually? - Y - N - A Slide 7 CHEN Yanming, CMCC
