How to plant Methods of installation are determined by root form B&B Bare-root Containerized How to plant

The size of your hole should be twice as wide as the root ball The depth of your hole should be about the same depth as your root ball If you have a compact soil you need to loosen the soil in the hole and add an amendment like compost or soil conditioner Planting Tips

B&B Round soil ball of roots wrapped in burlap fabric Planted flat- bottomed, straight sided hole that is deeper and wider than the ball

B&B Backfill soil should fill the hole enough to raise the plant to the level at which it grew in the nursery Loosen burlap around the top of plant Make a mound of soil around the plant to catch water

Containerized Planting Use same type of hole, mounded ring, etc. as B&B In addition, the plant must be removed from the container and the roots unwound or cut at two inch intervals if pot- bound

Bare-rooted Planting Plants have to have a mound or dome in the bottom of the hole to spread roots and direct roots to grow downward

Tree Staking Tall plants, even small trees, need to be staked to prevent blowing over

Mulching Mulching should be done Helps retain water Prevent weeds Improve appearance Minimize temperature fluctuations

Mulching Types of mulch Leaf mulch Hardwood bark Chips Pine straw Rice straw Newspaper Compost

Water Once a plant is planted, it MUST be watered in Plants are easier to plant in fall, less watering Plants require heavy watering the first month and then you can let them kick it Soak the first time (drowned) Heavy watering there after (1” of water must reach the roots) for a month Water

B&B Balled and burlapped plants should be handled by the root ball

Container-grown plants Should be handled by the container until removed Then they should be handled by the root mass
