GET WITH A PARTNER! ONCE YOU’VE GOTTEN THERE, ON ONE SHEET OF PAPER, WRITE OUT EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT MERCANTILISM!

AKA: The Gold part of the 3-G’s MERCANTILISM AKA: The Gold part of the 3-G’s

THREE KEYS TO THE SYSTEM:

WELL STOCKED TREASURY Money at this time is based on gold and silver Because of this, there is a fixed pile of money that is in the world at any given time Money can only be added to the pile if it’s dug out of the ground Because of this, powers did anything they could to keep as much of their gold and silver in their own pockets

GET STUFF FROM THE COLONIES Fixed pile of money: Spend as LITTLE MONEY as possible So instead of getting things that we need (Gold, Fur, Lumber, Food) from other powers… We get them from our colonies we set up! We don’t even have to pay them! Just send them the goods they need!! KEEP THE LOOP CLOSED As much as possible

FAVORABLE BALANCE OF TRADE Essentially, you want to have more goods going out than coming in from other powers Still get anything and everything you can from your colonies BUT, when there are things left over SELL THOSE THINGS FOR GOLD

TO SUM IT ALL UP: KEEP THE GOLD CLOSE THE LOOP TIP THE SCALES

SIMULATION: Each group should have a card with a flag on the top of it Each card will outline how you score your points and the resources you start out with (each is different) FULL SET = One of each Card (gold, food, industry, raw materials) Each full set = another industry next turn During each session, you may trade with other powers in order to get the goods that you need to score your points FOLLOW THE RULES ON THE CARDS COLONIES: NO TRADING WITH OTHER POWERS KEEP TRACK OF YOUR SCORE ON YOUR WARM UP SHEET!!! Hopefully we will have 3-4 five minute sessions of trading

IN YOUR GROUPS On your warm-up papers: What strategies did you use in trading? Were they successful? What restrictions did you have on your trading? How did they impact your trading ability?
