ANCIENT GREECE Just the basics

GODS AND GODDESSES (The main ones)

ZEUS Zeus was the Lord of the Sky, plus the ruler of the gods. He was the son of Kronos and Rhea. His signature weapon was a lightning bolt. He was married to his sister Hera, the Goddess of Marriage and Childbirth. He overthrew his father, Kronos, with the help of a mixture of mustard and wine. The mixture made Kronos regurgitate Zeus’s siblings, and with the help of his siblings, the Cyclopes, the Hundred-Handed Ones, and other spirits, he beat his father and the Titans, and took over the universe. FUN FACT: Zeus cheated on Hera multiple times, with almost every single woman alive in his time.

POSEIDON Poseidon was the God of the Seas. He was married to the sea nymph Amphitrite. He was the son of Kronos and Rhea. His signature weapon was a trident. As a child, he was eaten by the Titian Kronos. His brother Zeus freed Poseidon and his siblings. Then, they teamed up with other spirits and beat the Titans and Kronos.

HERA Hera was the Goddess of Marriage and Childbirth. She was the daughter of Kronos and Rhea. She was married to her brother Zeus, the Lord of the Skies. She was also, like her brothers, eaten by her father. Her brother Zeus freed Hera and her siblings. Then, they teamed up with other spirits and beat the Titans and Kronos.

DEMETER Demeter was the Goddess of Plants. She was the daughter of Kronos and Rhea. She was also, like her brothers and sister, swallowed up by their father, Kronos. Her brother Zeus freed Demeter and her siblings. Then, they teamed up with other spirits and beat the Titans and Kronos.

APOLLO AND ARTEMIS (The twins) APPOLO ARTEMIS Apollo was the God of the Sun. He was the child of Zeus and Leto, and the twin brother of Artemis. His signature weapon was the bow and arrows. He is also the Master of the Oracle of Delphi. Artemis was the Goddess of the moon. She was the child of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. Her signature weapon was also the bow and arrows. She also has a group of hunters that supposedly hunt with her, called the Hunters of Artemis.

APHRODITE Aphrodite was the Goddess of Beauty and Love. She had a belt called her girdle, which attracted people to her. She was the oldest Olympian, born from the blood of Ouranos. She was married to Hephaestus, the Blacksmith and Fire God, but then had an affair with Ares, the God of War.

ATHENA Athena was the Goddess of Wisdom. She was the daughter of Zeus and Metis. Zeus had swallowed Athena’s mother, so when Athena was born, she sprang from Zeus’s head, in full battle armor.

HEPHAESTUS Hephaestus was the God of Blacksmiths. He was the son of Hera. When Hephaestus was born, his “loving” mother Hera tossed him off Olympus because he was born with deformities. A sea nymph named Thetis rescued and raised him. After he grew up, he made a trick throne for Hera, and trapped her there until she apologized.

HERMES Hermes was the God of Travel and Thievery. He was the son of Zeus and Maia. As a child, he pranked Apollo by stealing some of his cattle. Apollo complained to Zeus, but Hermes invented an instrument that Apollo was intrigued by, being the God of Music. They made up, and then Zeus recruited Hermes into Olympus.

ARES Ares was the God of War. He was the son of Zeus and Hera. He had an affair with the goddess Aphrodite, Goddess of Love and Beauty. He was a very violent god, and favored war.

DIONYSUS Dionysus was the God of Wine. He was the son of Zeus, and a mortal princess named Semele. Because of Hera’s jealousy and anger toward Semele being with Zeus, she fooled Semele into planning her own death, so afterwards he was rowing in Zeus’s thigh. He was married to the princess Ariadne, former lover of Theseus.

HADES (He was not considered an Olympian but he was important) Hades was the god of the dead. He was the son of Kronos and Rhea. He was married to the goddess Persephone, the Goddess of Flowers. His realm was the Underworld. His was swallowed up by their father, Kronos. His brother Zeus freed Hades and his siblings. Then, they teamed up with other spirits and beat the Titans and s weapon was the Helm of Darkness, a warrior helmet that made him invisible. He was also, like his brother, Kronos.
