The other day a student (Tommy) asked Ms. Walsh: “Is it true that Kim Jong Un doesn’t pee or poo?” What do you think?

Introduction Have you ever made or heard of concept maps?

Let’s look at an example! Concept Maps A concept map is a diagram that shows relationships between concepts It is a graphical way to represent knowledge Let’s look at an example!

3 main components: Main theme Related concepts or topics Links

The Excretory System 1) Main theme You should start off by identifying the main theme for your map In our case this will be: The Excretory System

2) Related concepts or topics After identifying the main theme, you should think of a list of all the related concepts and topics For example: cells, tissues and organs associated with the system The functions of the system The functions of the different components of the system

Draw links between concepts to demonstrate how they are related Once you have your list of concepts, think of how they are related to one another Draw links between concepts to demonstrate how they are related

Example Main theme Related topic Related topic Related topic Link Link Link Related topic Link Link Further detail Link Link Further detail Further detail

There is no right or wrong way to do this! 

Time to make your own! (20 minutes) Please write the names of your team members on the back of the sheet 

Gallery Walk (5 mins) Walk around the class and take a look at what the other groups have made. Is it different from yours? How? Is it effective?

Discussion How did you like that activity? Do you think it’s a useful way to study? How could I improve the activity for the next time? What would make it better?

Exit Card There is currently some debate as to whether drinking sports drinks after an intense workout is the best option for hydration and recovery. Based on this food label from a Gatorade bottle, your knowledge of the excretory system, and your own personal experience, tell me whether you think drinking sports drinks like Gatorade is a good way to hydrate after intense exercise. Remember to justify your answers!
