How is energy acquired and used by organisms? Essential question How is energy acquired and used by organisms?

Bell ringer Two different species of bacteria are examined. Scientists find that species X always produces CO2 and H2O during cellular respiration. Species Y always produces ethyl alcohol and CO2. Which conclusion can be made from these observations? A. Only species Y is aerobic. B. Only species Y is anaerobic. C. Both species X and Y are aerobic. D. Both species X and Y are anaerobic. Answer B

Interactive Journal set-up Chart Guided Notes

Aerobic Respiration Aerobic means "with oxygen." Occurs when adequate oxygen is available. Takes place mostly inside of the mitochondria

Aerobic Respiration Reactants C6H12O6 + O2 Glucose + oxygen Products CO2 + H2O + ATP Carbon dioxide + water + Energy

Aerobic Respiration Function: This process supplies your cells with energy. Your body breaks down the fat and sugar you eat to produce a substance called adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. During aerobic cellular respiration, there are a maximum of 38 molecules of ATP formed, which is much more than any other type of respiration produces.

Anaerobic Respiration Anaerobic means "without oxygen" Occurs when oxygen is not available Takes place mostly inside of the cytoplasm Has different products in animals and plants

Anaerobic Respiration Reactants C6H12O6 Glucose Products CH3CH(OH)CO2H + ATP Lactic acid + Energy Or CH3OH + CO2 + ATP Alcohol + Carbon dioxide + Energy

Anaerobic Respiration Function: This process supplies cells with energy without oxygen in muscle cells. In plants and yeast it’s used for baking and brewing. During anaerobic cellular respiration, there are approximately 2 molecules of ATP formed, which is much less than is produced in aerobic cellular respiration.

ATP Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the nucleotide which provides energy for many vital functions. Referred to as the energy currency for the cell. In reference to the picture the breaking of the bonds that have the arrows and the word energy, these bonds must be broken in order to the energy to be released

We do Complete the following chart using your guided notes:

Bell ringer retry Two different species of bacteria are examined. Answer B

You Do A weightlifter is using heavy weights in short bursts for a competition. Because his muscle cells are not able to take in enough oxygen to make very much ATP the weightlifter begins to get fatigue in his muscles. Which of the following processes is most likely going on in the muscles of the weightlifter as he competes in his event? As the cells run out of oxygen they switch to anaerobic respiration, which allows the cell to make small amounts of ATP in the absence of oxygen. As the cells run out of oxygen, they die off gradually and the weightlifter's muscles have fewer contracting muscle cells. The cells will never run out of oxygen if the weightlifter is breathing. As the cells run out of oxygen, they will continue to make the same amount of ATP, since oxygen is not required to make ATP. Answer: D

You Do The ATP molecule is composed of three components. At the center is a sugar molecule, ribose (the same sugar that forms the basis of RNA). Attached to one side of this is a base (a group consisting of linked rings of carbon and nitrogen atoms); in this case the base is adenine. What function does ATP carry out in living things? aids in protein folding and coiling used to capture and transfer energy identifies DNA start sequences for transcription helps maintain the fluidity of cell membranes Answer: B

You Do To the left is a food web for an ecosystem. Which process do the animals in the food web use to convert energy from food into ATP? cellular respiration osmosis photosynthesis transcription Answer: A
