LEARNING TARGET & GUIDING QUESTIONS I can describe how humanism led to a revival of classical learning in Europe. How did a belief in humanism lead to a spark of learning and arts in Europe?

Humanism guided notes What is humanism? The events of the late Middle Ages had a great effect on many Europeans. Those who survived the years of plague and war wanted to celebrate and enjoy life. Meanwhile, the growth of trade introduced more people to new goods and ideas. As a result, new attitudes spread across Europe and helped to create new ways of thinking.

A. Revival of classical learning The end of the Middle Ages brought the return of learning to Europe. Education had declined during the Middle Ages because of war and government instability. By the 1200s, people grew eager once again to learn new things.

A. Revival of classical learning To achieve greater knowledge, people returned to the past. Revived the classical ideas of Greece and Rome Studied a variety of texts from these earlier civilizations to gain more hope and fulfillment

B. The growth of humanism Humanism is a way of thought that focuses on human beings and their potential for achievement. Study of classical texts led to this movement Stresses the study of history, grammar, literature, and philosophy Goal is to create well-rounded individuals and encourage people to achieve all they could in life

c. Humanist thought Stressed the importance of the individual This differed greatly from medieval times which placed kings and the Church above all else Promoted a greater balance between intellect and religious faith Humanist thinkers stressed the importance of leading a Christian life They also challenged people to think for themselves instead of blindly following Church orders Taught that people could enjoy life AND be good Christians
