Marijuana: Do the Laws Need to Change?

Definitions Legalization vs. Decriminalization Legalization: the product would be sold legally and taxed in a well-regulated market (like buying alcohol at the liquor store which is controlled by the government) Decriminalization: it would no longer be considered a punishable crime to possess, but sale would still be a punishable offense.

When this Controversy Started In 1923 it became illegal for Canadians to possess marijuana. This was during the time of prohibition in many provinces. Prohibition on alcohol was lifted but marijuana was, and is, still illegal. http://www.studyworld.com/newsite/ReportEssay/SocialIssues/drug%5CHistory_and_Uses_of_Marijuana-94.htm

Continuing Controversy People argue about the risks to both one’s health and community associated with marijuana vs. other legal and illegal drugs. Use of marijuana continues even though it is illegal

Health Pros Relieves nausea and vomiting Relieves spasticity of the muscles Helps treat appetite loss associated with HIV/AIDS and certain types of cancers. Relieves pain Safe, safer in fact than most other prescribed medications to treat the same symptoms. Smoking marijuana alone does not increase the risk of lung diseases. Has been used for centuries as a medicinal agent with good effect.

Health Cons Frequent marijuana use can seriously affect your short-term memory Frequent use can impair your cognitive ability Can damage your lung tissue Carries a risk of abuse and addiction Smoked marijuana contains cancer- causing compounds

Two Sides of the Debate

Legalize Marijuana (Many people want to see marijuana legalized rather than just decriminalized.) More deaths and health risks associated with legal substances (cigarettes and alcohol) than marijuana use If the government legalized marijuana, it would be better regulated, and taxes could be gathered from its sale.

Keep Marijuana Illegal Marijuana is a gateway drug and leads to the use of more dangerous drugs which would harm our society. Marijuana negatively affects non-users Health risks outweigh any possible health benefits (which are inconclusive)
