Militia A group of citizens acting as military force.

Land Title The sum total of legally recognized rights to the possession and ownership of property. Ownership of property.

Empresario Spanish word for a land agent whose job it was to bring new settlers into an area.

Immigration the action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country. Immigrate: to permanently move to a new country

Colonization Law of 1824 Allowed each Mexican state to set its own colonization policies and created new restrictions. New U.S. immigrants were not free to establish colonies near the nation’s borders or along the coast. Believed this would protect Mexico’s northern territory.

State Colonization Law of 1825 New state created: Coahuila y Texas Opened Texas to US settlement and immigration Empresarios would get 67,000 acres of land for every 200 families they brought to Texas. Settlers must be Catholic and Mexican citizens
