Embedding Academic Skills: Case Study in Business Management Dr Tom Cunningham, Dr Gordon Spark, Dr Daniel Clarke University of Dundee

Introduction Academic Skills Centre (ASC) Dr Tom Cunningham & Dr Gordon Spark School of Business Dr Daniel Clarke The Challenge of Teaching Academic Skills

STEP-UP to Business Transition into University module, 20 credits, first year Core academic skills: research, writing, group-work and presentations Focus on ‘Becoming, Being and Belonging’ (Thomas, 2012) as a University of Dundee student Content connected to the new V&A Museum of Design

STEP-UP to Business

STEP-UP to Business STEP-UP is like polish, polishing off the rough edges. There is a way that academic work is supposed to be done. It’s working for me so well [note-taking technique]. I would never have known about that if it wasn’t taught to me in STEP UP. I feel like now my revision is so much more effective because of that way of notetaking. [The tutors] gave you a lot more independence, it’s almost like they see you as adults and they taught you that way.

Enterprise The Enterprise Module, 20 credits, second year Introduction to enterprise theory and practice Core academic skills embedded: research, writing, group-work and presentations “I feel this module boosts people’s confidence and [helps them] engage and turn up in class [more] than usual”. “I enjoyed the challenge of doing something different and out of my comfort zone. It has definitely helped with my public speaking and has enabled me to work better in a group”.

Module Results

Next Steps Explore effect of Enterprise students already having completed Step-Up module Measure impact on student performance & grades Extend embedded academic skills support into Years 3 & 4 of Business Management degree Further collaborations and institutional buy-in
