POST SECONDARY EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES Career Technical Colleges—specialized training such as automotive, business, computer science, cosmetology, health care, etc. Community College---Associates degrees, Career Technical Certificates or Apprenticeship – earn while you learn Community College transfer to CSU/UC programs College/University-- Baccalaureate degrees Military/Armed Services---talk to a recruiter

COLLEGE Admissions A-G Minimum Subject requirements are: (A) 2 year of History/Social Science (B) 4 years of English (C) 3 years of Mathematics (through Algebra 2 ) (D) 2 years of science —2 of which must be lab based science courses (E) 2 years of LOTE -Language other than English (F) 1 year Visual or Performing Art (G) 1 College prep elective course

Naviance Family Connection An innovative educational planner provided by the SJUSD to assist students and parents It is a web-based resource that will help students explore careers, colleges, scholarships Students can create a post-secondary-Game Plan To access go to: Bella Vista’s Web-page and click on Naviance Family Connection

College Entrance Exams (SAT/ACT) Students must release their scores to the colleges they are applying to… Exams must be completed by December 2017 for consideration Several colleges have an October deadline Check each college website for their deadline since they can vary SAT information www.collegeboard.org ACT information www.act.org

Private/Independent and Out Of State College Applications Most Private/Independent Colleges use an online application service such as: Common Application or Send.edu Many require a personal essay/statement You must check deadlines and requirements online Letters of recommendation from teachers, mentors, coaches, and school counselors are usually required

Letter of Recommendation Requests: CSU and UC do not require a letter of recommendation Ask for recommendation – from their teachers, coaches, employer, mentor and school counselor Give them time - Three to four weeks is an appropriate amount of time Seniors are required to- create a resume and complete the yellow senior questionnaire.

College Representatives at BV Many college reps visit BV through out the Fall. These are announced in the school bulletin Students must sign-up in the counseling office to attend these visitations

Career Planning and College Major: Seniors need to continue to explore Career interests and aptitudes in Naviance Encourage your senior to retake their Career Interest Survey and Personality Assessment Research Careers and College Majors – based on what they know about their self Visit the Bella Vista College & Career Center located in the library. Open daily at lunch.

College Athletics: Must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center online www.ncaa.org to be recruited for Division 1 and Division 2 colleges NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) many division 2 and 3 colleges are members of NAIA

College Financial Aid – Fund Your Future- www.icanaffordcollege.com A FAFSA workshop will be held at BV In October, Date:TBD KNOW THE FINANCIAL AID DEADLINES FOR YOUR COLLEGES Community Colleges offer Board of Governors (BOG)fee waivers Scholarship information available in BV’s college & career center Other web-sites: www.fastweb.com , www.collegeboard.com/pay, www.finaid.org, www.CalDreamAct.org, or www.studentaid.ed.gov

Credit Recovery APEX courses zero and 6th period Many courses available 1 semester course At students pace For making up failed courses or grade improvement See counselor to sign up

The Senior Year Success Plan Having a post-secondary plan/direction Apply and plan for college Senior year grades count! Stay focused and maintain a challenging course load Stay active and involved Avoid senioritis

What is Senioritis?

What are common mistakes that lead to senioritis? Getting overwhelmed Not keeping priorities straight Forget or avoid studying Underestimating the time needed to get work done Daydreaming about future plans/lack of motivation Blowing off “less important” work Thinking the 2nd semester doesn’t count Missing Classes Failing to use resources that are available Giving into “senioritis”

Preventable & Regrettable If any senior receives Social Probation they run the risk of not being able to participate in the Graduation Ceremony.

Avoid Preventable & Regrettable Mistakes Pranks Are NOT okay They always get out of hand

Avoid Preventable & Regrettable Mistakes Attendance 36 periods of cuts = No Graduation Ceremony 36 for 6 classes, 30 for 5 classes Closed Campus violation=Sat. School/Cut No prior Early Dismissal = Cut Cannot call in a student’s absence after they have left Only those on emergency cards can excuse student 1 ROP Class = 3 periods of cuts

Bella Vista Graduation Traditions Bella Vista’s graduation ceremony is held in the Bella Vista Main Quad in the morning. Students behave respectfully and with decorum. Dress code: The school dress code is in effect; Boys are expected to wear dress shoes, dress pants and a button-up shirt; Girls are expected to wear dress clothes, as well as dress shoes.

Ceremony Reminders Must be in Graduation Dress Code No adornments of caps and gowns Poor behavior that draws attention from the ceremony will result in removal Get here early-parking is limited Tickets distributed Each student gets 8 tickets total

DISNEYLAND GRAD NITE TRIP 2018 May 31st to June 6th graduation trip Cost $215 until August 31st. $240 9/1-12/31 Parent/Senior information night - October 25th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. - $1 donation collected at door.
