What is a Political Division? A political division is geographic region accepted to be a in the jurisdiction of a particular government division.

Examples of Local Political Divisions: Neighborhoods Cities Counties States School Districts Election Districts

Examples of Regional Political Divisions: Regional district: several counties lumped together like Hampton Roads Examples: waste disposal area code zones conservation districts planning districts

Who do local & regional divisions exist? A desire for government to be closer to home Citizens want to solve local problems Easier to administer resources more efficiently

How do local & regional political divisions create cooperation? Work together during natural disasters Economic advantages (attract new businesses) Cultural similarities (ethnic neighborhoods) Addressing regional issues (waste management, magnet schools, transportation)

How do local & regional political divisions cause conflict? Boundary disputes Cultural differences Economic differences Competition for scarce resources Gerrymandering – Manipulate an election area by altering boundaries in order to gain unfair political advantages
