“World Record Attempt To Identify Fingerprints” Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1

What do these fingerprints belong to? KOALA HUMAN PRIMATE The Koala has fingerprints that are so similar to the human fingerprint that it is almost impossible to tell them apart because of the pattern, shape and size of the ridges. Under the microscope, the ridges look exactly the same. The width of the ridge, the shape, general size and pattern is the same. The main difference is that the entire human palm and fingers are covered with ridges while the koala only has ridges on its fingertips and some parts of the palm. The whole purpose of fingerprint “ridges” is to enable us to grasp or grip materials.

Are twin fingerprints the same? No, they are completely different!

Do we have similar patterns on our feet?

Fingers need to be “Rolled” Praise students if they are able to produce 10 “rectangular” F/Prints. Get stickers at the ready!

Can You Take Your Own Fingerprints? We are going to enlarge this later!

Take Your Own Footprint (Team Exercise) PLANNING NOTES Take Your Own Footprint (Team Exercise) Give yourself a good space! Take off your shoe and sock. Peel open one, two, or three NEW ink strips. Gently step on the ink strips and transfer your foot to the A4 piece of paper. Wipe the ink off. Write your name on the footprints you have just taken. This is a “team” or “table” exercise. Choose one student to actually take their footprint. Make sure the surface will take INK! Two students to steady the volunteer, one student to remove the ink strips which will stay stuck to the volunteer’s foot. One student to help place the footprint on the “taking sheet”.
