What is different about these soils?

SOIL- Part of the regolith that will support rooted plants. A combination of weathered minerals from rock and organic matter. TYPES OF SOIL 1. Residual - Soil that has formed from the rocks and regolith right under the soil. Very Rare “Residue” 2. Transported - Soil that has been moved into an area from another place. Very Common

SOIL FORMATION Rock begins to get weathered at the Earth’s surface Top layer of rock breaks down, solid rock underneath becomes exposed to water, animals, and plant roots This creates horizontal layers or zones called Soil Horizons

Bedrock (unweathered) Organic Material Top Soil Mineral Soil Weathered rock Bedrock (unweathered)
