Blue smoke is bad news…if you notice, it will even have a burning oil smell to it. Watch out for leaking oil on the engine like this. It could indicate the engine is nearly gone. If the seller doesn’t admit this up front that it leaks or burns oil, be very wary.

Evidence of leaking antifreeze which is commonly bright green in color Evidence of leaking antifreeze which is commonly bright green in color. It might indicate a failing water pump which can be expensive to replace. Are there any other fluids on the ground underneath the car, whether it’s washer fluid, brake fluid, or power steering fluid? Even if you don’t know what it is, point it out to your friends and seller and ask, “What is that?” Anything you see needs further investigation.

What a brake rotor should look like:

Notice the deep grooves on this brake rotor? And the pieces broken out of it? This rotor is unsafe and should have been replaced long ago. T Notice how this brake pad is completely worn down on this side? It should look exactly the same as the other pad.

In this example notice how the outside of the tire is worn off? This indicates the front end is severely out of alignment and you need new tires as these are shot.

Good! Note the uniformity of the body panel seam. BAD!!! Good! Note the uniformity of the body panel seam.
