The Process of Science

The Process of Science In 1928, Alexander Fleming noticed that bacteria he was studying did not grow in the presence of a yellow-green mold. In 1945, Fleming shared a Nobel Prize for Medicine with Howard Florey and Ernst Chain, who led the team that isolated penicillin.

What is science? Science is a system of knowledge or a way of knowing that requires _____________ and __________________________. How do you DO science?

The ____________________________ is an organized process used by scientists to do research, and provides methods for scientists to verify the work of others.

Scientific Method What are the steps? 1. Make an _____________________. 2. Write a ____________________. 3. Perform an ____________________. 4. ___________________and make _________________________. 5. _____________ results with other scientists. The steps in a scientific method are repeated until a hypothesis is supported or discarded.

Scientific Method What are the steps?

The act of gathering information. Making Observations The act of gathering information. _______________________– any observation (color changes, release of heat, etc.) ________________________– any measurement you make (mass, volume, temperature, etc.)

Making Observations Suppose you try to turn on a flashlight and it doesn’t light. An observation can lead to a question: What’s wrong with the flashlight? Observation is an essential step in the scientific method. Is everything you observe a fact or REAL?

A hypothesis is a __________________ for an observation. Testing Hypotheses A hypothesis is a __________________ for an observation. You guess that the batteries might be dead. __ the batteries are out of power, ________ by replacing them, the flashlight will light up. Test your hypothesis by putting new batteries in the flashlight. If the flashlight lights, you can be fairly certain that your hypothesis is correct.

Designing Experiments An experiment is used to ____________________. When you design experiments, you deal with ____________, or factors that can change. You change the ___________________ variable. You observe the _________________ variable. (it depends on what you changed) The ________________________do not change. The data will support the hypothesis, or will cause it to be revised and retested. Three same plants. 1 gets green light, others red and yellow and blue. Same water, food, time in light, etc. Which will grow more in 2 weeks? Answer: red and blue most growth (have right amount of energy to charge chlorophyll electrons to next level) What is Ind and Dep here? Changed the color light, depend is plant height (measurable)

Controlled Experiment _______________– part of the experiment that represents standard conditions (receives no experimental treatment) ______________________– the test group that receives experimental treatment Example – You want to know the effect salt has on the freezing point of water. Control group - _____________________ Experimental group - __________________

A theory is a ________________ ___________ for a set of observations Developing Theories Once a hypothesis is supported by repeated experimentation, it may become a theory. A theory is a ________________ ___________ for a set of observations A theory may need to be __________ to explain ______________________or new experimental results

Theories do NOT become laws! Scientific Laws A scientific law _______________________ of many observations and experiments. Theories do NOT become laws! A scientific law doesn’t try to _____________, explanation requires a theory. Successful ______________ can help visualize difficult concepts and predict new observations. Nature doesn’t OBEY laws, laws describe and predict what happens in nature.

information obtained from the senses. Quick Quiz! 1. A hypothesis is information obtained from the senses. a proposed explanation for observations. a thoroughly tested explanation for a broad set of observations. a concise statement that summarizes the results of many of experiments. Observation Theory Law

2. What are two steps in the process of science? Quick Quiz 2. What are two steps in the process of science? ask questions and make up answers. observe and experiment. ask a question and propose a theory. test a hypothesis and prove it is true. d. can’t prove true, only valid with support or not.
