Mountain Building Write on the RIGHT Side

Deformation The process where rocks change shape under stress Spaghetti Demo: SLOWLY bend the spaghetti. This causes the spaghetti to deform. Similarly, stress over a long period of time can cause rock to bend. Now bend it QUICKLY. The spaghetti breaks. Similarly, stress over a short period of time can cause rock to break. The process where rocks change shape under stress Stress over a long period of time the rock bends forming folds When rocks break, faults form

Folding Occur when rock bends under stress Classified based on the age of the rock layers.

Faults Fault: The crack that forms when large blocks of rock break and move past each other. Sudden movement of these fault blocks can cause earthquakes. Can also cause the formation of mountains. Faults are classified based on how they move

Three Types of Faults Discuss, Don’t Write Strike-Slip Faults: Form under Shear Stress (stress that pushes rocks in parallel but opposite directions) Normal Faults: Form when the rock is under tension (stress that stretched or pulls rock apart) Reverse Faults: Form when rocks undergo compression (stress that squeezes or pushes rock together)

Uplift Process that can cause land to rise and contribute to mountain building

Three Kinds of Mountains Folded Mountains: form when rock layers are squeezed together and pushed upward Volcanic Mountains: Form when melted rock erupts onto Earth’s surface. Fault Block Mountains: forms when tension makes that lithosphere break into many faults.
