What’s the purpose of today’s lesson? Take three minutes and scan the beginning and end of the short story focusing on who the characters are and what might be happening. Draw conclusions—use what you learn from your reading to make general statements about people, places, events, or ideas. Respond—explore how the people or events in a reading selection make you feel! Synthesize—as you read bring together information and ideas from the text with information and ideas of your own. Determine the main idea—what’s the most important detail? Why?

Don’t forget the key elements Conflict— internal vs. external—the biggest struggle in a story Dialogue— conversation between characters Character—a person in a story Plot—a series of related events in which a problem is explored then solved. Don’t forget plot structure Conflict—what the plot revolves around Exposition—introduces setting, characters, conflict Rising Action—events that cause or add to the problem Climax—the high point of story—protagonist has to make a choice Falling Action—events that result from the decision Resolution—end result of the decision Don’t forget the key elements of a short story!
