Background Essay Vocabulary DBQ 1

Mustard Gas Chemical weapon used during WWI. Causes severe blistering and damage to the skin and lungs. Can cause blindness and death.

Combatants People, groups, or countries that are fighting against each other. In WWI, the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary) fought the Allied Powers (UK, US, Russia, France)

Carnage Large scale bloodshed, death, and destruction. Approximately 17,000,000 people (soldiers and civilians) died in WWI.

League of Nations Organization created by the Treaty of Versailles with goal of maintaining peace and preventing future conflict. Did it succeed? NO! WWII happened less than 20 years later and the League of Nations was dissolved.
