Presentation transcript:

Air Force JROTC At Clinton High School What is the AFJROTC program? 3 yr course of Air Force instruction, 4th is optional, curriculum is academically comparable to secondary level science course; curriculum – intro to aviation, national defense, careers, space, and leadership; 60% devoted to first 4 subjects, 9th-12th grades What is the mission of the AFJROTC program? To develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation & community. The purpose ….to instill in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment. The program is not about recruiting high school students into the military, it’s about making them better citizens for their community & nation. AFJROTC participation incurs no military obligation to students.

Air Force JROTC At CHS Curriculum opportunities include: Academic studies, character education, life skills education, leadership opportunities, & team building experiences Optional Extra-curricular Activities Color Guard & Drill Teams Kitty Hawk Air Society JROTC academic honor society Model Rocketry & Radio-controlled Aircraft Clubs Cadet Flight Program Incentive flights in civilian aircraft for top performers Honors Ground School 1st step towards private pilot’s license; prepares cadets for the Federal Aviation Administration written exam; can be considered an honors program Field trips to military installations All programs are optional & require principal approval, as other school programs do. Units/Schools are encouraged to tailor extracurricular activities to each environment.

Optional Summer Programs Air Force JROTC Optional Summer Programs Aerospace & Technology Honors Camps Purpose is to orient high-achieving cadets to aerospace & technical civilian or Air Force careers Host 10 camps in 5 locations (GA Tech, Univ of OK, Wright State, Univ of New Mexico, AZ State) Open to rising sophomores, juniors, & seniors enrolled in JROTC for at least 1 year AF Senior ROTC scholarship criteria used to screen applications Cadets attending camp must be U.S. citizens Emphasis on aerospace and technology All students receive an orientation flight

Air Force JROTC Why the need for funding approval? The Air Force normally pays for half of the salaries of the two instructors but cannot fund new programs because of budget limits to the AF ( At Present ACS funds $68,000.00 per year for the JROTC program at ACHS). The state of Tennessee has 24 JROTC high school programs already; Tennessee is only allotted funding for 16. Bottom Line: New programs cannot be funded but… CHS can fund salaries under the NDCC category which could mean in the future that…. CHS could move up on the list where the AF pays half the salaries.

Start-up Budget year one Air Force JROTC Start-up Budget year one Salaries and supplies for Oct. 1, 2011 – July 30, 2012 Salaries Officer – 10 months $45,000.00 Enlisted – 6 months $26,000.00 $71,000.00 Uniforms, equipment, etc $29,000.00 $ 100,000.00 Year two: Salaries Enlisted – 10 months $39,000.00 $84,000.00

Air Force JROTC Why the need? Timeline August 2011 – Approve operating budget of $100,000 in order to start classes on January 4th, 2012 which covers the 10-month salary for Major Pittman and 6-month salary of the selected enlisted individual; & for start-up supplies to include uniforms, flags, guidons, etc. Year two – Approve budget for Aug. 2012 of approximately $100,000 for 10-12 month salaries of 2 instructors and supplies. Air Force will need the program to be up and running for a full year to evaluate the success of the program. Why the need? Reap benefits for the students, school and community!!

Benefits of An Air Force JROTC Program 3 year course study of military instruction Developing students/citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation & community Instilling in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.
