Describe what types of regeneration have been implemented. Urban regeneration Learning objective – Recognise that many urban areas need regenerating. Describe what types of regeneration have been implemented.

Classwork 21st January 2012 London – urban regeneration

London regeneration Why was regeneration necessary? Discuss! For nearly seventeen years, between July 1981 and March 1998, the London Docklands Development Corporation(LDDC) worked to secure the regeneration of the London Docklands. Why was regeneration necessary? Discuss! There were job losses over a short period of time, as the Docks closed. Between 1978 and 1983, over 12,000 jobs were lost so new places of employment were necessary. Many development sites were poorly served by the local infrastructure so it was necessary to regenerate to attract businesses to the area. Social problems – high numbers of unemployed people, high levels of deprivation, crime, poorly skilled / educated people. Environmental problems – deindustrialisation (decline of industry) derelict land, contaminated soil, fly tipping and issues with vermin (rats).

London Olympics and regeneration Why was East London (Newham) chosen to host the Olympics?

Describe the pattern on the graph (2) Figure 10 – The % of the population with no educational qualifications, 2001 Describe the pattern on the graph (2) 1 point – main pattern (which is highest and lowest), 1 point – data to support first point. What evidence does this graph provide us with to show that Newham needed regenerating? – Discuss.

Figure 8 – How incomes in Newham (shown by the arrow) compare with the rest of England and Wales, 2008 Figure 9a – Employment status in Newham, 2001 Figure 9b – Employment type in Newham, 2001 What does this information tell us about the area? Discuss in pairs & make notes in your book

Photo analysis - What was Newham like before regeneration took place? Make notes from the following slides about the problems that the area faced.

Waste dumping ground before clearance

The travellers’ site at Clays Lane in 2007 before clearance

An abandoned factory which had to be cleared for the new Olympic Park

Describe the housing! Annotate your picture with the issues you can see.

Successful or not? Written task - Evaluate the successfulness of the regeneration of Newham – think about the economy and the impact the Olympics has had as well as the local people!

Homework What is the Eden Project? To be handed in on Thursday 24th January 2013.
