Time: Marking Periods 2 & 4 Areas of study include- Scientific Method: small experiments completed to practice following the steps Ecosystems: create an aquarium and terrarium to form an eco-column, grow plants, observe animals, student pollutants, pollute designated eco-columns (Clear soda bottles, please  ) 3. Space Science: explore the earth, moon, and sun- skills include measuring, predicting, estimation 4. Properties of Matter: volume, mass, & density Organization- Classroom Folders and e- files

Time: Marking Periods 1 & 3 Geography/ Map Skills 1. World Map 2. Geographical Terms 3. North America Map 4. Explorers History 1. Colonization of Southern, Middle, and New England Colonies 2. Leveled Reading Groups – small portions of a story with independent practice Whole group lessons: read aloud, read alone, read together, story talk Novels (common theme) may be read independently Short stories- also accessible via Internet Pre and Post Reading Assessment: writing and computer component

Spelling will follow a weekly routine: -Lessons will concentrate on the pronunciation, usage, and spelling pattern -Phonics based -Homework practice throughout the week -Test at the end of the stories -Spelling City

Vocabulary- Idiom and Homophone of the Week 2. Grammar- parts of speech, punctuation, and sentence structure

Time: Periods 3 & 4 Aligned with new national standards (Common Core) Students will keep work in their binder/folder and take notes using a composition book Practice and Assessment: Quizzes/Assessments throughout units Chapter Tests- class review Star Math- differentiation Homework and practice page completed daily. A weekly homework grade will be entered into Power Teacher.

GYM: Twice a week (Day 5 and 6 all year) MUSIC: semester ART : semester Applied Technology: Woods & Intro to Coding (1 marking period each) Spanish (1 semester) D.A.R.E- 10 meetings

Organization -Folders for each subject (in classroom) -STAR binder: *Agenda Book: Please check and sign daily *HW folder- check daily for graded work; sign and return graded papers, reflections, etc. .

B. Behavior Modification -MARBLES: class rewards -Marking Period Activity: individual reward -Consequences include teaching warning, recess detention, parent phone call or note sent home -Behavior modification methods may change throughout the year to keep kids motivated. For example, taxes will be collected during unit on Revolutionary War.

C. Conferences- December -Parent, teacher, and child participation -Goal of this conference style is to make students responsible for their learning -Sign up before you leave tonight -Forty-five minute time slots

D. Make-up work -If absent for one day, your child can complete make- up work when he/she returns to school. -For long term absences call Mrs. Paglione at Guidance office for work -Call Attendance Office to report absences

E. Lockers -Locks will be sold last week of September -Cost = $5 and must be purchased from school -Please practice combination at home with your child (Directions will be sent home )

F. Laptops -Must be charged every day -Will go home on Friday -Used as a learning tool, not a toy
