FastMeet is an over 18 rated dating app FastMeet is an over 18 rated dating app. However the description in the android store references boys and girls rather than men and women. “If you wish to find another single, who would be a perfect match for you, do it online through this app. A girl or a boy, you are looking for, might live nearby. FastMeet fully satisfies your needs”. The interface is typical of such an app and encourages users to approve other users by liking them. This allows users to interact through the messaging function. This app has been responsible for multiple incidents in November regarding adults chatting to young people for the purpose of offending in person rather than online alone. Fast Meet

Omegle is a live streaming website that does not require an account or age verification. The website randomly matches users with someone else across the world and encourages strangers to talk to each other via instant messages and through webcam. It also encourages users to remain anonymous. Sex offenders are increasingly using live online streaming platforms to exploit children. Children need to be educated on the risks associated with streaming sites, the National Crime Agency said, noting that offenders were learning how young people communicated online and "using this knowledge to abuse them". In one week, authorities identified 345 vulnerable children and arrested 192 people, 30% involving streaming, blackmail and grooming. Abusers thrive on the immediacy these live platforms offer - targeting children with tricks, dares and threats to manipulate them into nudity or sexual acts. It is easy to see why young people like these sort of apps, gratification is instant, it seems like fun and they are emulating their favorite vloggers who do the same thing. The more "likes“ a young person can get the greater the affirmation for the child. Omegle

Say Hi is a free messenger app that allows individuals to find and chat to other people. Say Hi states “Say Hi can help you find new people nearby! It helps you find love by chat, meet and date new friends!” On Say Hi people can use text messenger, video chat, upload pictures, send voice messages and show other’s their location. Users can search nearby people and view their profiles. The app is PEGI 18 rated, however children are still using the service. A recent case in the region involved an 8 year old girl using the family IPad, when the parent asked to borrow the IPad the girl became defensive and the parent discovered multiple indecent images the girl had been sending over the app. Users can utilise the Instant video messaging and live video chat with their new friends, which is being branded as “meet face to face before you meet face to face!”. live streaming is a growing method of grooming, any app which supports this feature is a potential issue for children. Say Hi

With the internet and apps evolving every week it can be easy to feel like technology is moving too fast for us, however it doesn’t change the fact that young people will always seek to interact with technology and will always require our advice and support when online. Below are a number of resources to help educate adults and young people around the issue of online safety and app security: The UK safer internet centre; where you can find e-safety tips, advice and resources to help children and young people stay safe online. For help and advice contact : 0344 3814772 or helpline@saferinternet.org.uk The Revenge porn hotline; the only organisation providing such a service in the UK, providing support and advice to the victims of the non-consensual sharing of intimate images and cyber-enabled blackmail (known as sextortion). POSH (The Professionals Online Safety Helpline); The Professionals Online Safety Helpline is a free service for all professionals and volunteers working with children and young people. It provides signposting, advice and mediation to resolve online safety issues staff face about themselves, such as protecting professional identity and online harassment, or problems affecting young people, for example cyber-bullying or sexting issues. Where appropriate we can also provide advice or facilitate in the removal on harmful content. POSH have created good relationships with many of the giant tech companies and are a great place to start if you have any concerns with a particular site or App. UK Safer internet centre Professionals Online Safety Helpline Revenge porn helpline Protecting young people from online grooming Please support the Revenge Porn hotline crowdfunding campaign www.crowdfunder.co.uk/revenge-porn-helpline
