Goal: To understand what makes Jupiter tick. Objectives: To learn about the Atmosphere To explore its Formation To explore its Core To learn about Magnetic Field To review the Shoemaker-Levy impacts
Does Jupiter have any rings? Note to self, explain briefly formation here
Jupiter laid out This is a composition of images from the Cassini spacecraft. Notice the structure of the atmosphere.
Storms! Image from HST Jupiter has many storms in its atmosphere. The most famous is the giant red spot. How would Earth compare to this image? What creates the bands of Jupiter?
Bands of Jupiter: Caused by convection of the atmosphere in the North-South direction as the atmosphere moves upwards. This is also called “Hadley Circulation”.
Hadley circulation http://ess.geology.ufl.edu/ess/Notes/AtmosphericCirculation/atmoscell_big.jpeg As air moves North or South, it moves E/W because of the spin of the earth. Going up in Latitude means you have less rotational Energy (smaller radius). Therefore, to conserve energy, the air moves westward.
Applied to Jupiter: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0011/redspot_cassini.gif
Colors in Jupiter’s atmosphere: The colors are due to different chemicals and temperatures for different parts of the atmosphere. The red parts are clouds lower in the atmosphere which are warmer and absorb more sunlight. The white parts are cooler clouds higher up in the atmosphere which reflect more sunlight. (from Moons and Planets)
Jupiter in the Infrared IR is opposite to the optical. Red parts in optical are bright yellow here and white parts are dark here. How would the energy emitted in the IR compare to the energy absorbed from the sunlight? A) same B) much less C) twice as much

Does Jupiter have a “solid” surface?
Jupiter’s core
Jupiter Magnetic Field
M field 2
Shoemaker Levy 9 comet In 1995 a comet crashed into Jupiter. The comet a few years earlier had gone by Jupiter. The tidal forces from Jupiter broke the comet into dozens of pieces. From this we have learned a lot about asteroid impacts.
Fireball! What does this remind you of?
aftermath
Conclusion Jupiter is a giant world with even greater weather. Everything about Jupiter is big.
