About Noise Noise is unwanted sound Sound is the quickly varying pressure wave traveling through a medium. When sound travels through air, the atmospheric pressure varies periodically. The number of pressure variations per second is called the frequency of sound, and is measured in Hertz (Hz) which is defined as cycles per second Noise intensity is measured in decibel units. The decibel scale is logarithmic; each 10-decibel increase represents a tenfold increase in noise intensity. Human perception of loudness also conforms to a logarithmic scale; A 10-decibel increase is perceived as roughly a doubling of loudness. Thus, 30 decibels is 10 times more intense than 20 decibels and sounds twice as loud; 40 decibels is 100 times more intense than 20 and sounds 4 times as loud; 80 decibels is 1 million times more intense than 20 and sounds 64 times as loud.

Physics Of Hearing Hearing is a complex process that involves many parts of the ear working together to convert sound waves into information that the brain understands and interprets as sound.

NOISE POLLUTION Sound that is unwanted or disrupts one’s quality of life is called as noise. When there is lot of noise in the environment, it is termed as noise pollution. Sound becomes undesirable when it disturbs the normal activities such as working, sleeping, and during conversations. It is an underrated environmental problem because of the fact that we can’t see, smell, or taste it. World Health Organization stated that “Noise must be recognized as a major threat to human well-being”

Sources of Noise Pollution Transportation systems are the main source of noise pollution in urban areas. Industrial noise also adds to the already unfavorable state of noise Pollution. Boilers, Generators, Pneumatic equipment, Air conditioners, Pump, Fans, Turbines, Machines add to the existing noise pollution. Construction of buildings, highways, and streets cause a lot of noise, due to the usage of Air compressors, Bulldozers, Loaders, Dump Trucks, and Pavement breakers.

Dangerous Noise Levels In general, noise levels below 85 dBA (decibels) are considered safe, while anything above 85 dBA will cause hearing loss. According to the Center for Hearing and Communication, the volume (dBA) and the length of exposure to the sound will tell you how harmful the noise is. The louder the noise, the less time required before hearing loss will occur. For reference, 0 decibels is the softest sound a person can hear with normal hearing, while 10 dBA is regular breathing. Rainfall is 50 decibels, while a normal conversation is 60. Beyond the level of safety at 110 would include something like shouting in someone's ear or thunder at 120 decibels. Want to know more? Solutions/Remedies for Noise Pollution Planting bushes and trees in and around sound generating sources is an effective solution for noise pollution. Urban Planning, Public Education and Awareness. Regular servicing and tuning of automobiles/ machinery can effectively reduce the noise pollution. Alteration of roadway surface texture. Buildings can be designed with suitable noise absorbing material for the walls, windows, and ceilings. Soundproof doors and windows can be installed to block unwanted noise from outside. Factories and industries should be located far from the residential areas. Workers should be provided with equipments such as ear plugs and earmuffs for hearing protection. Control in the Transmission Path, Control at Source, Control over Vibrations. Exposure Reduction Enclosure of machines can reduce noise levels at its source very effectively. Leakage where pipes pass through walls as well as acoustic leaks between walls, screens or enclosures, can produce large variations in the attenuation achieved. It is therefore important to seal air gaps carefully Putting major noise sources at one place & separating it from quieter area. Using acoustic barriers, sound absorbing linings & sound insulating partitions. Complete or partial enclosure of noisy equipment.
