Introducing The Knowledge Network www.knowledge.scot.nhs.uk

What is The Knowledge Network? A platform of useful online resources including NHS Scotland Library Free access to e-journals, e-books and databases Access to many specialist information portals Access to e-learning opportunities Access to online communities and opportunities to build your own

Who can access it? Many of the site’s resources are available to anyone and do not require a password (patient information, abstracts, citations etc) Full text articles, communities and customisation features require registration To register, you must be affiliated with NHS Scotland (employee, partner, volunteer, student, researcher etc)

Personalising the homepage The Knowledge Network can be customised to fit your needs The homepage contains “widgets”: a compact set of content and features (appearing on a webpage as a box containing text and images). These widgets can be moved around, expanded, collapsed or removed entirely

Personalising the Homepage To move a widget, simply click and drag Select “Add a widget to the panel…” button to add or remove widgets from the homepage Use the “Edit” option to change the content of a widget.

What is here for me? The “What is here for me” widget details the key resources within The Knowledge Network, including portals, journals, databases etc.

Searching for Information The Knowledge Network allows you to search across 12 million information and learning resources from over 100 providers. You can conduct a basic or advanced search, Evidence and Guidance search or a Library search for journals, articles and books Alternatively, if you are familiar with any particular database, you can select one from the list of databases and search within that database

Filters Save searches Use filters to narrow your results by resource category, information source, year etc. From here you can save records to ‘My Resource Space’, email, print and tag. Save your search to be run at a later date. Save & Share 13

Exercise 2 Use the basic search to find information on dental implant (or a subject of your choice). Review the list of filters available on the left side of the screen. Select and apply the Leaflets and Websites filter from the Leaflets and Resources for Patients/Service Users category. Conduct the same search within Library. How many articles can you find?

My Resource Space My Resource Space is an area in which you can bookmark resources and access them later on. Access My Resource Space from the top bar available on any page of The Knowledge Network. This section allows you to: bookmark favourite resources organise them into folders based on tags (or keywords) you choose save and share Manage the content on your homepage NOTE: You must be logged in to use My Resource Space. You must also accept the community rules if you want to be able to tag.

My Resource Space My Resources Index of resources added by you. Access and manage your resources from here. Save and Share Select resources to save and/or share via email, tagging, printing or adding to My Resource Space.

Exercise 3 If you do not a have a NHS Scotland Athens user name - Go to The Knowledge Network (www.knowledge.scot.nhs.uk) and register for a username and password If you have an Athens user name - Log in and continue with the next exercise

Exercise 4 Conduct a basic search (for anything you like) and select a record to ‘Add to Save & Share’ . Add your marked record to My Resource Space From My Resource Space, add some tags to your saved record

Exercise 5 Add a record to Quick Links. Check that this now available from My Quick Links on The Knowledge Network homepage.

Edit Profile Within The Knowledge Network, each user has their own profile You will be prompted to enter information into your profile page when you log in for the first time

Edit Profile Selecting “Edit Profile” on the homepage reveals your personal profile. From here, you can add your personal details for others to see.

“Edit profile” page Click “edit” to add your personal details. My Profile My subject interests Enter your own interests as tags. My Experience Enter your experiences, publications and current activities here. Accept communities rules and guidance and set your privacy options. Rules and Permissions.
