Introducing your hidden BIM ability South West BIM Conference 8th October 2013 Introducing your hidden BIM ability
Where is the industry now?

How mature is our industry? Half of people are aware of the levels of BIM maturity This may be related to a growing scepticism about available information. Only around a quarter of people (27%) agree that ‘I trust what I hear about BIM’. Further, when we asked about how confident they are in their knowledge and skills in BIM, more people told us they were ‘not confident’ than ‘confident’. There’s still work to be done.
Attitudes towards BIM: perception vs. reality
The government’s view “the ’what’ and the ‘why’ of BIM have largely been relegated and replaced with the ‘how’.” "BIM is a 21st Century campfire - it gathers people together." “Whilst the enabling technologies and our data sets are a big part of BIM, it has been that level of engagement and open (at times radical) collaboration that has been the big win.” David Philp, Cabinet Office
10 things you think you know...
1… Everyone is in the same position
bim 2... Carry on regardless traditional bim
3… Issue information the way its always be done 3D Virtual Design Use 2D Formation Construction
4… BIM is just 3D 4D Time (Phasing/Sequencing) 5D Cost. (Measuring/Estimating) 6D Life Cycle. (Building Owner / FM) And the list goes on... 11D?

10... BIM is all about technical ability? technophobes technophiles Half of people are aware of the levels of BIM maturity This may be related to a growing scepticism about available information. Only around a quarter of people (27%) agree that ‘I trust what I hear about BIM’. Further, when we asked about how confident they are in their knowledge and skills in BIM, more people told us they were ‘not confident’ than ‘confident’. There’s still work to be done.
How confident are you in your BIMability? “It will be the cultural and behavioural changes that many will find most difficult... and yet I believe these will prove to be the most important if we are to be successful.” Nigel Clark, Hilson Moran
Where you are in the change process? denial commitment http://constructioncode.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/bim-show-live-2013.html resistance exploration
Behaviour change towards collaboration Co-ordination avoid gaps and overlap in team members work Co-operation obtain mutual benefit by sharing work Collaboration achieved results which could not be accomplished alone Ref; “Collaboration entails finding the right group of people (skills, personalities, knowledge, work-styles, and chemistry), ensuring they share commitment to the collaboration task at hand, and providing them with an environment, tools, knowledge, training, process and facilitation to ensure they work together effectively.”
Do you already behave in a BIM like way?
Do you seek others contribution? consistently act in the best interests of the project & the team? really value others views? seek others contribution? demonstrate appreciation of the perspectives of other team members? Reference;
Do you share information knowledge & outcomes in a timely fashion? encourage others to share information knowledge & outcomes in a timely fashion?
Do you ask for assistance when needed? respond positively to the requests of others for help & support?
Do you identify areas for resource sharing & opportunities to collaborate? or partner with others both internally & externally? develop & maintain networks of working relationships?
Will you change? denial commitment resistance exploration
