Polynomial review Honors math 3

A combination of one or more terms Largest exponent on any one term The coefficient on the term that provided the degree Descending order based on degree of each term 1 2 3 4 5 all exponents in one term 6 9 4 5

Add/subtract like terms only Like terms means they have the same variables (letters) and the same exponents on those variables!

When subtracting, subtract everything on the right

When multiplying, multiply everything in one parentheses by everything in the other….

Methods to accomplish multiplying “everything by everything” FOIL (first, outer, inner, last) “Box Method” (use a grid to make sure everything gets multiplied)

Divide each term in the first/top polynomial by the monomial in the second/bottom…remember to subtract exponents

If you are not dividing by a monomial, you will have to do long division or synthetic division which will be covered in a future lesson!

Let’s go fishing 
