Refugee Crisis in North Korea

North Korea Currently under rule by Kim Jong-Un. North Korea is still one of the most repressive countries. Chronic food shortages and falling economy. According to the 2014 UN Commission of Inquiry, the abuses in North Korea are unparalleled in the contemporary world. Conduct prison camps for those perceived as defective. No free media, religious freedom, and civil functioning society (Songbun System). No freedom of movement, speech, and information.

Refugee Crisis It is illegal for North Koreans to flee the country without the regime’s permission. And regime restricts the people’s movement. Inside or outside. But every year, thousands of North Koreans risk their lives to escape the country. Many who fail are taken back and met with severe punishments.

Refugee Exploitation Those who succeed escape to China. In China, the government does not recognize them as refugees. Their illegal status makes living hard and leaves them vulnerable. Most of them are exploited by corrupt employers and sex traffickers. Some captured by Chinese military are sent back to North Korea for ransom. Children born to North Korean refugee mothers and Chinese fathers face difficulties.
