Year 10 Film Study

Unpacking your essay topic – choose one Explain why the director shows a character change in a film you have studied What character changes in the film you studied? Why did the director show this change? Explain how the director successfully develops your understanding of a character or characters in a film you have studied. What understanding do you have of a character in a film? How does the director successfully develop your understanding of the character?

Unpacking your essay topic What questions are being asked in the essay topic? E.G. In the essay topic Explain how the director successfully develops an important idea in a film you have studied the questions would be: What is an important theme/idea in the film? How does the director make this idea clear to the audience?

Gathering your evidence What kind of information do you need to answer the question? Make notes under each of the essay topics Highlight any gaps in your notes You need detailed viewing notes from at least one key scene to help you. A strong answer will supporting evidence from more than one key scene to demonstrate an understanding of the film as a whole.

Planning your essay Introduction: A statement that shows you know what the topic is answering. A list of your three main points Paragraph 1: Contextual information – what is the film about? Who are the main characters. Paragraph 2: Links to the main part of the question. If your question asks HOW, answer that here. Paragraph 3: As above. To achieve strongly, at least two points should be made and supported with evidence. Conclusion: Summarise the points you made in the body of your essay.
