SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISM George Herbert Mead and his student Herbert Blumer

The symbol-centric interaction Involving language and symbolic gestures O = Object Object is provided meaning M = Meaning Meaning regulates behaviour B = Behaviour People attach meaning to symbols and then they act according to their subjective interpretation of these symbols.

A Micro Sociological perspective in sociology People interact through symbols, words, gestures, rules and roles. The symbolic interaction perspective is based on how humans develop a complex set of symbols to give meaning to the world. Meaning evolves from their interactions in their environment and with people. These interaction are subjectively interpreted through existing symbols, understanding these symbols is important in understanding human behaviour. The symbolic interactions perspective considers individuals as selves i.e. as organisms who are able to respond to situations in terms of their perceptions of them

Features of Symbolic Interaction Human beings act toward things on the basis of the meaning they have. The meaning attributed to those things arises out of social interaction with others. These meanings are modified through an interpretive process
